which silkolene oil to put in my '04 GSA

hi all,

i remember Steve (motoscot) telling me to put silkolene into my bike when i next needed to and i can remember which version to buy. i think it was one of these:

"......SUPER 4 RANGE
Semi-synthetic 4-stroke engine oils, with MC-Syn Technology, for all modern motorcycles. Incorporates detergents, dispersants and load carrying agents to give excellent engine cleanliness and minimum wear of moving parts. Contains a balanced blend of inhibitors and anti-wear agents to ensure correct operation of oil immersed clutches and other drive line components. The advanced additive chemistry protects the engine and transmission from start-up to full power......"

Available in 10W-40 and 20W-50 viscosity grades

but i can't remember which one - i'm after the one that will help the bike run slightly quieter -

oil choice

thank you very much for your help Steptoe, i might need to come see you soon about putting a stop to a rattling from break disc and the strange dissapearance of the wavey washers...!!

just started a new job so difficult thru the week, are you open on saturday mornings..?

Buy a set of new washers and bolts. No need for wheel removal or anything else complicated - Undo one disc bolt at a time and replace with new bolt and washer.
 
err.. silkolene super 4 is a MOTORCYCLE oil.

and as such unecessary for a BMW... will do no harm. But as its a MOTORCYCLE oil will perforce be overpriced due to all the fancy additives these bikes simply neither need or require.

If you want to use silkolene brand then silkolube 20w/50 will be a better bet. £8 cheaper and you get 5L instead of 4.

Thank you :thumb - as i don't use silkolene i didn't know they did a motorcycle specific oil, and as you rightly say, it's not needed on a bike with a dry clutch and seperate gearbox.

Motorbike oils have fewer additives - in particular the friction modifiers that will screw a wet-plate clutch.

I'm not sure about that.. surely MOTORCYCLE oils will have additives to allow for a wet clutch and gear box.

which goes some way to explaining why they're so much more expensive compared to traditional 'car' oils.

That doesn't explain the huge price differential between Motorcycle oils and standard car oils... but anyway.. all this talk about motorcycle oils is immaterial. the fact is these bikes dont need them. Using them is simply money down the drain. £24 for 4L of bike oil - £16 for 5L of car oil... with a similar spec.

4L is no good.. particularly if your bike is still consuming oil.. the little bit left over wont last long.. so whats the answer? spend a further wack on another litre of oil?

£30 all-in? :augie
