No no, not which side do you dress, sir! I am referring to which way you turn your handlebars when you set your bike on its sidestand. I have always turned the bars to the left but have noticed that this practice is not universal.

So what are the pros and cons of left or right 'flopping'?

Turn to right to get on & off - it "opens the door" and lets the bike angle lower, so easier. Then turn to left to raise bike before lifting side stand.

HTH

Depends on ground conditions (camber etc) but I would normally turn bars to left like yourself which is confirmed in owners manual (page 65)

Well this seems to have elicited some 'interesting' replies already.........:augie......so I wonder if there may indeed be a correlation after all with 'which side Sir dresses'. But this also raises another question altogether which is how we park on sidestands in Europe with the camber on the wrong side of the bike to the sidestand?

Curiouser and curiouser. :mmmm

I do my flies up after leaving the toilet.

I never wonder why, I just do it.

It just seems to make sense.

To the left. always done this as it makes sense to me that this would be the most stable 99% of the time. This is actually the recommended way according to the BMW manual as it happens. I've had dome bikes where the steering lock can't be used unless turned to the left.

john are you really that bored that you have to ask questions even indecisive would think are daft

To The Left because If some one bumps the bike forward it turns into the sidestand

BUT if you have your bars to the right then when IF the bike moves forward it moves up and away from the sidestand allowing it to close!!!

Also leave in Gear!!!! ESPECIALLY A K1200LT DAMHIK!

This is the sort of thread you can find answered to infinity and beyond on the BMW owners club forum.

Uhhhhhhh please.

Now that makes sense at last..........:thumb.

Now now autogs, if you can get indecisive to commit to confirming that this question is daft, I'll stand you both a jar and a pie next time we meet up. :D Anyhow, what else is there to do on a Friday night except ask stupid questions...........

poles apart

does it make any differance if you live south of the equater?
are there any changes if you park near a "lay line"?
oh god, wot about how much fuel i`ve got left in the tank?
why am i doing this????:blast

In the garage to the right, at work to left, except if it's raining when I just leave the the front heel pointing straight forward (both in the garage and at work).

At Xmas I didn't get the bike into the garage before the snow came down and I spent a paranoid week without sleep popping out to change from the right to the left and vice versa as it was neither in the garage or at work and not by definition raining. After advice from SWMBO I then turned to religion and being christian ensured it faced towards Jeruselem, but then got worried that Mecca was in very much the same direction (only a couple of degrees in it and my compass isnt that accurate) so sought the advice of a hindu friend who advised me to keep it in a stable next to a cow front wheel pointing north.

I always use the centre stand if I'm parking the bike. I only use to side stand to get on it (so I don't drop it).

On my Ariel I use the rear stand

I'm currently using a wine bottle stand.....

A few weeks back in the really strong winds my ADV was blown upright, went over the top and down on it's right side. I'd left the bars turned R, won't be doing it again.
