Which wire for switched supply?

Hi guys,

Sorry if this has been posted before but couldn't find specific advice.

I have an '02 1150GS.

I want to wire in the factory-supplied cradle for my new Zumo 550 using the fused fly-leads supplied with the GPS. I want to supply it from a source switched by the ignition rather than wiring it direct to the battery.

As I have very limited tools and space (and also being fundamentally lazy) I would also prefer not to have to lift or remove the tank unless necessary.

Is there a spare connector I can tap into? If so, where do I find it?

A mate suggests I use those "scotch-lock" connectors that tap into an existing wire. If so, which wire would you suggest? Instructions where to locate the relevant wire would be useful

Alternatively, if you think this is a silly idea then I'm open to alternative suggestions (but be gentle

Hi Robroy,
On my Versys I connected it directly to the battery via the supplied in-line fuse. Once the Zumo is turned off if draws no power.

I get my R1150GS on Saturday and I plan on doing exactly the same thing.

Hi rob, easiest i found was in the fusebox. Its also one of the neater ways of getting a switched live....i cant remember the exact colours but i did a post about this for someone the other week

robc, I want a switched supply as I hear there can be leaching across contacts in the GPS mount if it's always live.

vilguy, the fuse box sounds perfect - will check it out on the weekend.

I believe it's the thicker light green wire.

thats the one. theres loads of thinner green ones but one or 2 thick green uns thatll take a bit more current. But a gps draws bugger all so no worries with it. ive got my aux. lights hooked up to it, so a fair bit more juice

I've left mine turned off on the Versys for 3 weeks without it discharging the battery.

Just my 2p worth.
