Whining sound from 2005 R1200GS. Anyone had the same issue?

:beerjug: When you have an accident in a remote 3rd world country, it is amazing how much help you can get from locals. In Indonesia where I had my accident, I met some truly amazing people who helped me to get everything organised.

It's good to know there are still a lot of good people in the world willing to help those in need.

That has been the most amazing part of the trip, meet people. No matter which country I have been, people have always been really warm and welcoming.
If I would believe news, I would think that world is pretty messed up place, but the truth is totally different.
Of course one can be in wrong place wrong time, but this is highly unlikely.

Now I am stuck in small village in northern Mexico (until alternator is fixed) and people are really, really nice. Interesting to see how it is going to be through central-, south America and through Africa :) Still one more year to go :moped:

Wow least you & the bike survived, the fact it's running ok I hope you get though the trip ok,you can do a write up in travel section :)

As I shall be in Viet Nam next week I felt compelled to view 3 of your vids - Malaysia, Laos and N.Viet Nam. Very good vids and some great stills. Though I'm not traveling on a bike I fully intend to once there, so a big thanks for those vids, especially Laos and N.VN!

Oh, and good save... boarding the ferry! :thumb

Enjoy the rest of your travels , Marko! :beerjug:

Thanks JayC :)
Those are amazing places to explore with bike.
Northern Vietnam is a bit difficult, because big foreign bikes are not allowed to get in. Luckily there is one border in Laos which might let you in with a big bike.

I try to enjoy every day, even some days offer more challenges than others :) Overcoming those challenges makes trip even more fun!

Hi
Appreciate this is an old post now - but - in the Pyrenees a month or so ago and battery suddenly stopped charging - clearly the alternator (belt was OK).

It got recovered back to UK and when Alternator came out the casing was seriously cracked - so pulley's wouldn't turn.

thought this might be highly unusual as alternators (cars and bikes) usually seem very solid - apparently not so unusual on the GS - was told by BMW dealer that wires on coils heat up, expand and crack the housing.

Anyone else encountered this - mines a 2008 GS.

Any thoughts on whether this is a know fault and whether anyone has ever got BMW to pay for it

Thanks

Good luck with that on an eight year old bike...

The alternator cracks because corrosion between the winding core plates blows the core apart and breaks the case.

The My 08 GSA has the Bosch alternator. It's always whined to some extent but has never changed for better or worse. It's now done nearly 60K so I might swap the alternator shaft bearings.
