Hi,
In celebration of the first black prez from Moneygall, and the Palestinian people of Gaza, I went out on the dirtbike on friday. Worra blast!
Went with one man named Sam from Ballymena, and a Saudi named Ayman, cool pair, very experienced in the sand, which sadly I am not - yet!
In the spot at 0640hrs, 5 degrees and windy, sheet!
Warmed up as the sun came up but not too hot, which was lucky because the soft sand is a hoor. The sand in some places is well churned from the 4wd's, you are buried to the bollix as soon as you slow at all.
There is one big dune in the Athumamah area, quite prominent. the two boys have cracked it, one straight blast up from the bottom, fair play tot hem.
There were 2 4wd's there which also climbed the dune, looks bloody tricky, and very risky. If they don't get to the top, they have to do a u-eey across a very steep slope which would definitely give me brown stains. Pretty good, pretty good.
Tiring but great fun. Takes a while to change gear from roadbike to dirt bike - letting her fly around the place under you....bit like skiing and horsejumping.
Just on the way back to Riyadh, I mentioned what a hoor it must be to break down in the dunes, which has happened to Sam a couple of times. Then, Ring ring - Hi., this is Dennis, I am stuck in the Liwa Oasis with holed piston... he was lucky he had a phone signal. Too far for us to help. I am thinking of an N95 as a phone and back-up GPS, deffo need a second gps because you could be fooked if the main one dies.
