I've been advised there is a bulletin out that the torque of 40 Nm is in correct and should be 30 Nm.

I still have my broken screw so I'm taking it in for a refund for the replacement screw I purchased. They are not cheap.

The flange broke off mine.......i ended up with a nut and a washer:mmmm

Me too

Yep, flange broke off my front axle nut at last service with dealer. Michael however, was good enough to zip across the road and have a stainless one made up, no cost to me This'll never disintegrate and can be torqued up to the original spec of 40 Nm. Looks shiny all the timev though - compared to rest of bike :blast

Wouldn't BMW have a reason for the 30 Nm and the bolt sharing the flange off if you over tighten. The replacement nut was $20.00.

What I can not understand is BMW NZ or the dealer not notifying all 6 owners of the mistake. This is a major bolt.

Losing your nuts...

from my quick perusal of the previous posting's ...... it looks like the problem is the mechanical properties of the Alloy nut as supplied to the pacific Rim supplied Bikes, whereas the machines supplied to the OLD World don't suffer the Degradation of materials in the long shipping time To these areas ........ it could also be something to do with maintaining your machines after a few tinnies ..IE not knowing your own strengths

I always thought Nm meant "not much" and the "ft" in lbs ft means "friggin tight":blast

Who knows Dean, 30Nm will stop the flange breaking off the original as this $20 nut quite apparently can't handle the specified 40Nm. Me, I have a preference in using one that will cope with the original torque specification determined by the engineers designing the bike, not some marketing git in Australia that tells me and the service techs just to use less torque. No fault of the one staff member at BMW NZ who actually gives a shit about owners in NZ, but BMW NZ is well short of its game since the marketing, sales and dealer (what's left of them) administration functions have been shifted to Australia. What's happened since that happened I hear you ask - we get **** all information about any problems with bikes, Motorad in Wellington pulls the plug and takes on Triumph, Yamaha is already sponsoring the Safaris, and now KTM are going to sponsor the 2008 Capital Coast Ride. I have no idea what I'm going to relace the HP2 with (and BTW that's only going to happen when I eventually kill it :D) but I may be visiting the dark (orange) side if things keep going the way they are going at BMW.

Changing the wheels last nite to head out on the dirt this morning and...........you guessed it another free washer from BMW:eek
That one has been on and off maybe 4 times at most and was not overtightened due to the first one breaking. Luckily i had a spare one because when i ordered the last one two came in the packet........maybe the people in the parts department know something so they throw in a spare:rolleyes:

The one staff member left in NZ has been the back bone of BMW in NZ:bow and my comment was not directed at him:blast it was my general displeasure of what BMW Aust and NZ have done to the motor bike side here.:nenau The bolt was only a side issue.

Guys,

Stop at your local BMW car dealership and order :
BMW PartNo: 11 13 1 250 089 (costs 2.88 Euro's)

It's a sump bolt, which has the same shape as the BMW wheelbolt, but is made of steel.

If you are working on the bike at home, with a torque wrench and cleaned threads, the original bolt might survive, but as soon as you get stuck in the field, you're f*cked.

Cheers

Picked up a new axle nut today and it seems they have changed the design totally, it is now a steel plug with a hex for an allen key.......way more durable than the alloy, i wonder how tight i can get this one:augie
