...and which distro. ?

I'm using Linux mint and liking it a lot.

Its turned my old 1.3Ghz, 7 yr old Dell into a fast machine again.

I really haven't got that much of a clue yet, but i'm learning fast.

Just found compiz window manger and i can now have my desktops on a rotating cube ...:D

And AWN manager - gives you a mac like set of icons

Any other cool home apps i should know about ?

Try a few if you get the chance, I have run the majority of the better known distributions in the past including Red Hat, Debian, SUSE and Mandrake and have to admit the Ubuntu my wife runs on her eeeP is as good as any, and they will all support windows emulation (WINE) so you can run windows applications as well.

I don't have a workstation using Linux at the moment but have one server running Suse 10 and one server running Ubuntu 8 and am hoping to start another one up with Ubuntu. If I was going to put a workstation together it would be using Ubuntu as I find their installer the easiest and you can get a CD from them for free :D

I use a shell that just gives me access to various media player options.....it's an almost instant bootup and runs on low power.....it's just meant for when you want to use the PC as a stereo I guess.

I've played with various distros and have a bootable cd with something on that gives access to things like files and folders that are deleted when a new windows install is out on with a new username but I also like my games occasionally and use XP nearly all of the time day to day.

Suse 11.1 on an old Sony Vaio (6yo or so). Works a treat as my general knock around the house internet machine. Given it a completely new lease of life. :thumb2

I do, bang per buck its a great body spray!

Linux has come on leaps and bounds over the years. The biggest trouble with a lot of OS's is that they are built for the "average" computer at that point, coders get very, very lazy. Virtually everything you buy these days comes with Vista on it... I was talking to a mate yesterday, a guy he'd worked with had been successful in rolling a Vista Sony back to XP and was not only seeing a massive boost in performance but also battery life of up to 11 hours - which is just insane!

I've had fun recently recommisioning old Nokia IP440 (probably £20k+ worth of kit in its day) with SecurePlatform and seeing some outstanding results in performance.

there's a lot out there if you are willing to have a play.

edit : Actually... I seem to remember a few years back some collegues of mine had a lot of success running Linux as a base OS and then running Windows in VMware on top of that, apparently they got better performance than running Windows natively
