I know lots of early 1200s have had the ABS removed for good reasons and work perfectly well without but, as per the article in RiDE July 2023, if you don’t declare this mod you’re probably not insured.

So which companies has anyone declared to and agreed to cover them? I know an assessor might turn a blind eye or might not notice but for my peace of mind I want to get this sorted. Thanks everyone!

How do you know your bike has or hasn't got ABS?

Likewise if it has or hasn't got abs how would you know if it was or wasn't working ?

The early gs 's could be specced with & without ABS.

So unless you know its been sevoectomised ... or not specced ....

A big clue

A large ABS button on the switchgear

It has the ABS button on the switchgear (which I could replace with a non-ABS unit I suppose) and I have the receipt to show the ABS was removed by James Sherlock from the previous owner. The braking is superb but if the worst happens I don’t want my family shortchanged because I was too tight to pay an extra £100 for insurance - equally I can’t imagine many companies knowingly insure a modded GS 🤔

Have you tried asking your insurer? Or have you just assumed they will not do it?

Given the number of heavily modified bikes and cars out on the road, I guess not all of their owners have lied to their insurers, when it comes to declaring modifications.

I went to the NCC bike show in Cheddar yesterday and was surprised at the amount of choppers that didn't even have a front brake !

It will only be a case of declaring it amongst any other mods done to the bike eg after market exhaust, suspension etc. They will not refuse to insure it. Life is a worry......

My 2010 GSA came out of the factory without ABS...rare indeed
Not that rare , I bought my 2011 gsa new and BMW UK had a number of non ABS ( either with or without ESA ) bikes in stock or in the delivery pipeline , ordered mine and the dealer had it in stock within 2 working days

Hi Clemx got me curious now what did the article say?

Bemoto are worth a word with they are usually good on understanding about the differences in bikes, I spoke to them regarding the 1150's and for me they said it wasn't an issues and I got a quote on it with abs removed declared on the 1150. Obviously everyone needs to do there own research as every company is different an wont insure on certain things according to the broker I spoke to. I'm currently just starting the search so your thread caught my eye.

An like Johnny said, you also have the abs pickup on the rear FD, thats tapped out in the case of the 1150 an easily checkable as with any work thats been done by BMW or said it's been done the service history on the BMW comp and the specsheet of the individual bike no getting away from that.

Although my pref in my personal search is for factory none abs incase anything ever changes.

Very curious what the article said though.

Much of it is obvious but it won’t stop bikermates, debating for hours with the call centre chimps, as to whether their changing of the oil or tyres is an alteration from standard. Don’t believe me? Read the pages of UKGSer.

Thanks everyone. I’ve since read that Bemoto and Carole Nash have insured 1200s which have had ABS removed. I’ll be making a few calls and updating this in the next week or so.
