Yesterday, whilst balancing my throttle cables, I managed to shear the bolt off inside the spring-loaded cam on the throttle body. Now I can't get it out, and will have to disassemble the whole bloody lot, drill the old bolt out, and buy a new throttle cable and rethread the whole thing (the throttle cable adjuster is not available on its own).

In my defence, I didnt try turning it very hard. hardly at all in fact. obviously dont know my own strength, or else its made from cheese. The part that came off looked pretty corroded and seized. ho-hum. Anyway, I had a thought, how about starting a sticky for idiots such as myself, posting tales of DIY-repair woe, which may state nothing but the blindingly obvious to those better educated than myself, but would serve as good warning to other hapless DIY numpties who only learn by trial and error of what NOT to do when trying to "repair" your bike.

Lesson 1: DON'T just keep trying to force seized bolts by brute force. You may regret it.

any thoughts/similar experiences?

You did loosen the locknut............ Didn't you ??????

In the spirit of the thread

I bought a Migsel lamp bracket from another of this site and the night before a trip to Brittany in April I fitted said bracket carefully following the instructions;). Five days later when loading my R1200GS for the return trip I noticed that there were two vertical strips on the forks that wern't dirty. Upon further lookings I found that when on full lock the Migsel was making contact with the forks (where thay are nicley machine turned) and had roughly milled away the finish leaving two ugly scars about 4" long. I was so traumatised that I ripp.. Removed the offending bracket there and then and haven't looked at it since. It sits cowering in my garage awaiting a braver soul than me (or a grinder:mad:). Anyone want to buy a scarred GS/sell a set of new upper forks for a GS/want to buy a Migsel bracket & spots. Oh why didn't I just go see Les W.

I’d go for it with a hammer, a big one, put it out of it’s misery

I smashed up a fake Rolex the other day, very satisfying :D
