So the big debate in our house (between me and me) is whether to buy a much desired by me Moto Guzzi Stevilo not a new one 4v or 8v or ntx.

seen a couple in my budget but...

the beemer has just had a service new hyper pro springs cam chain tensioner, pivot bearing and final drive done last year, new shoes, fuel filter all the oils done... just need to focus on the clutch slave.....

I am struggling to let it go..... really wanna do more touring this year, i have no doubt the beemer is up to it but i have an itch and it wont go away....

have thought of no.2 bike a MG v7 storm as my run around to scratch the itch....

anyone in the same dilema?

Dusty

I was in the same place - had also decided that if I was going to replace my 1150GS that I would be looking for a Stelvio rather than a 1200GS. Then I took my GS to mikeyboy and spent a fraction of what it would have cost me to change to get the bike gone through and everything necessary replaced or rebuilt.

I would recommend keeping the GS and getting it fully sorted. V7 is a nice bike to have as well.

I am fortunate enough to have 3 bikes in my stable (Yam S10, TEX and the 1150GS), and although I rode about 20k last year less than 3k were on the BM.

The newer bikees are on a Sorn at the moment but the GS still hasn't moved since last October.

I've had her since new (Jan 2002) so I find it hard to sell. 60k on the clock and only let me down once....rear wheel bearing! If I sold and regretted it (as I often have with other bikes in the past) I couldn't replace her.

It's hard to explain how you can get attached to a machine!!!

I keep trying to let go of the GS habit & failed again with the recent purchase of an 1150 GSA.
Will I never earn... :blast

I found that it was the range of riding types that the 11½ could encompass that just got under my skin. Id didn't matter whether I wanted to ride from Glasgow to Truro in a day, razz it on a track, off-roading in the Dales or Peak district or a long tour in a remote country, the bike excelled at all of it. It also looked like a motor cycle and not the result of an explosion in a plastic factory.

It's a shame that the the design, engineering integrity and quality of the BMW product have suffered with later models.

Nope - not in the same boat at all. Long term 1150 owner since 2000 and currently on my 3rd. I've test ridden everything that's come out since and whilst more modern bikes are certainly faster, the 1150 is good enough in every area to not justify changing. As above, spend a bit more on your bike and spend the rest on biking next year.

If you're really fighting the 'new' bike urge, get yourself an old airhead. You get the benefit of a new bike whilst instantly making your old 1150 seem bang up to date and very fast!:augie

:thumb Thats certainly true, I bought a Harley......and that even makes airheads seem sophisticated :D

Hi Dusty,
Please bear in mind everything I'll say is personal opinion, but it is my view of several adventure style bikes I've owned over the last few years.

After 37 yrs of continuous motorcycling I bought my first adventure style bike. 1150 gs adv se. A great bike and Jo and I did many a happy mile on it. But it was under powered when fully loaded 2 up.

Swapped it for a new 1200mu. Nice bike, but swapped for a 1200 TC which in my opinion is the best gs ever.

The TC was swapped ( oh hindsight is a wonderful thing ) for a WC, which is a long story, but it led me to look away from BMW for my next bike.

Enter the Moto Guzzi Stelvio. It was, and I still believe is a fantastic bike. If you're happy with performance that is better than an 1150gs, but not as good as a TC gs then it's a real contender.

The Stelvio is a cracking bike. Lovely to ride, handles well, and so so soulfull. Even fully loaded the performance isn't effected that much, and that includes handling.

At 59 years of age I thought that my days of requiring real grunt from a bike were over, and was more than happy to bimble around on the Stelvio. That was until I'd gone away with a mate on his Explorer and realised that maybe the Stevio was a little lacking, which was confirmed by a later test ride.

So, now I'm on an Explorer, which after sorting the riding position and suspension is most probably the best overall bike I've ever owned.

I was 60 a couple of weeks ago, and maybe in the not to distant future my need for real grunt in a motorcycle will have diminished.

So, what will be my choice of motorcycle if and when this day arrives ?...No Doubt...Moto Guzzi Stelvio.

Having said all of the above, there are some fantastic bikes out there these days. They all, without exception have their problems but, they're all a dam site better than 20yrs ago.

If you don't mind average performance give a Stelvio a go, it makes up for it in many ways and well outperforms an 1150.

Happy hunting.

Steve

Thanks Steve

now im really fecked

going up to teasdale tomorrow for a test ride, i am 40 and not shall we say of the same performance when i was a ducati riding 20 year old...

Have a good day Dusty.

Andy and Allan at Teasdales are two really nice lads and I'm sure they'll do all they can to help you. Although Andy does appear a little more stressed since they took on several more francises.

Just to add a little more confusion to the mix. Last time I took my Stelvio for a service they lent me a KTM 1050 adventure for 48hrs.

It was a cracking bike, much nicer imho than the 1190.

Itch scratched

Rode bertha up to to teasdale , runs like a dream with new shoes new hyper pro springs camchain tensioner and me 20 50w oil int.. had a ball shes running well....

got to teasdale

threw me leg over the v7 demo and set off back for home....

initially i thought oh no... but by the time i got to the A19 roundabout I was hooked.. not pokey not the fastest but the sound was mint and i was away.. i must have looked a twat with me Tour ex on but feck it , what a great bit of kit........

got home had a good hoak around ... mulled over it with a brew, then set off back to Thirsk.

needless to say deposit laid down hand shake made... i am now officially a guzzi owner.

Andy did me a cracking deal... headlight cover, engine bars and some wider handlebars and a couple of hundred quid knocked off....

That was my only issue was the width of the bars.. Andy sorted it. I have signed up for a life time warranty (parts and labour) £100. These start in January so a very fair deal great service by teasdale.

so happy bunny still have bertha and my little MG for the those work days and a blip across the moor roads....

Look forward to hearing how you get on with the v7, how far did you ride it today?

Which model have you bought?

This is her JB. did about 70mile in all... down A19 towards York then cut down through Raskelf and all the little backroads to Linton and back. Road a new 15 plate demo bike which was stinkin by the time i got back.

I actually spoke to the old owner of the bike im buying who had it to spain and back 2 up which i thoughts was fair brave.

The initial ride made me think what have I done here... but i would have likened it to stepping out of challenger 2 into a mini 1275gt... everything felt very loose and extremely un comfortable. But once i got used to the foot rests etc and the weirdo indicators ..lol... i was like a big kid.

Took me back to my M600 days ... loved it... the exhaust note from the standard can was feckin great.

I was was worried about me height 5-11. And my girth (super human size) would make me look like a twat) but i have to say it got comfy real quick....... the only issue was the bar width which Andy has sorted.

I am particular about my bikes and a creature of sticking with what i know.. but i was really excited ti get back and sign up for one.. yes its in used condition but it looks great and suites the purpose i want it for.

I would really recommend a blast ... what harm can it do...

Sweet, here's to many miles & smiles....

Dusty, how did you find the rear suspension? I road tested a V7 a couple of years back and did around 100 miles on it by which time my lower back was in agony due to the jarring shocks coming through the rear suspension. The exhaust started to fall off the cylinder head and it kept stalling at junctions but all that aside it seemed basically to be a great wee bike. It was a very low mileage demo bike so maybe not prepared too well.

Packer.

Didnt really have any issues but only really went 70 mile or so. I actually spoke to the guy who own it previously just before i went out on the demo bike, he'd been 2 up to spain and back on it with no issues, he did say that he had farted about with the shocks but didn't mention any issues....

was actually talking to Andy this morning about availability of hyper pro, but he had said in all honesty he hadnt had any real feedback on shock comfort. My only issue was the bar width, cause i is massive, i need to spread my arms out a bit.

once ive had it out a bit i'll report back, I suspect the rougher the road surface for prolonged periods of time will give one a few aches and pains....
