been looking for a top box for my 1200gs and keeping an eye on ebay. Last 3 boxes on there have all gone for £245/250 inc delivery and all have been used and carry dents in the ally and scratches.

but a new box with lock and a bit of discount is only about £40 more than that. so why buy damaged second hand goods and not even save the vat?

and to make matters even more silly, there is a guy selling an apparently pretty clean one with lock where the buy now price is £290 delivered or almost the same you would actually pay your friendly local BMW dealer.

so am I missing something here?:blast

Because people forget to ask the dealers they just think they are expensive...

I have got parts for much less new and from the OEM than you find them on ebay..... handy as you can buy 3 and sell 2 to cover the costs...

They don't do the research before bidding. When the 1200 Adventure was introduced in 2006 you could buy the beak guard from your BMW dealer for £22 but they were going on Ebay for over £50!

had the same thing a couple of years ago where people were paying £40 less for dented well used boxes than new. I finally got one because the ad was spelt wrong and for the side boxes I dropped the idea of BMW boxes and got a set of Jesses instead in perfect condition with mounts for a quarter of the price new. Keep at it and the idiots will eventually run out of money as well as they don't fit the 2013 bike so there will be a load on the market.

Yes you are a skinflint:D Why not do the right thing and get a shiney new one? They only cost about £40 more than you would pay for a beaten up secondhand one! Is there anything more simple? Or am I missing something Ha Ha !

agree, more expensive parts like the FPC or a shock are around the same at my local dealer as indie parts seller new prices or those on ebay,

where local dealer doesnget my money is consumables, horrendous mark up

What do you see the relevance being - of "saving the VAT"?

Saving VAT is only relevant if you are VAT - registered yourself, and can claim it back? :nenau

Any experience of what this outfit are like to deal with?

Yes, I bought a Givi E55 top box from them a couple of months ago. Their communication once I had ordered was good and the delivery time was as promised by them. Price was good too.

In context it made perfect sense to me. Many dealers offer products "free of VAT" as a way to say 20% discount.

As for eBay its a lottery. Ive been looking at used GS prices on completed listings and while most are beyond me, every now and then one sells for silly low money

Promoting a product as "free of VAT" equates to a 16.67% discount not 20% :D

They usually reckon in the motor trade that when you walk out of the showroom with a new bike or car, its immediately decreased in price by the VAT - ignoring special situations like when there is a shortage with a new model.

I suppose the logic of this is that whilst you are actually paying £1.20 for an item, the real value of that item is only £1.

Check out the true tax rates in UK when VAT and excise duties are included. Scary stuff and I don't drink or smoke.

Your be lucky to get one for less than £400 from a dealer

Maybe you should do both - do it enough and things don't seem so scary

I can't take gluten so beer & lager are no no. I'm not fussed about wine and get bored with cider. Guess I could home brew.

But on the tax issue, the government take an ever bigger percentage and p**ses most of it up the wall.

let me elaborate

you might find that sometimes the deal is box and carrier for 250 ish,i have seen but missed by minutes.
I have priced at bmw for approx 400. price includes box, carrier and coded locks .
and the very agrivating tax
