....broke my Achilles tendon up by Bealach na Ba on the climb over to Applecross. The assistance and sympathy I got from Julie, the landlady at the Applecross Inn cemented my opinion of the Scots, brill- I love you all!

She's from Holmfirth, Yorkshire....

My only reservation about the country are the midges, voracious little bastards that they are, mercifully I wasn't bitten once this time, no doubt they'll catch up the next time I come up.

Thank you, Scotland, you're magic. :beerjug:

Midges are not an issue, just buy locally a high concentrate Deet stuff, works well :beerjug:

Plenty of brand names, happy to name them (but not now cause its Friday night, fires on, whisky poured and I cant be arsed going to look them out). :friday

Actually, I did come prepared, it was something that had worried me for weeks before. I brought some Skin-so-Soft, which I didn't have to use, as, to my delight, I only saw half a dozen of the little varmints.

This Skin-so-Soft stuff, does it work?

Myself and a pal usually have a weeks bimble and camping on the west coast of Scotland, however ,this year we decided to try and follow the weather.

We ended up following the East coast around Lincolnshire and Norfolk ending up in the New Forrest, riding in not one drop of rain for the whole six days.

Are we doing this again ?

Well I for one am not, don't care if it's lashing down the whole six days,it's back to the west coast of Scotland for me.
Where else in GB can you ride all day on fantastic roads and only see a handful of other vehicles.
Then pitch your tent with a view to die for :thumb

OK,it's wet sometimes, but in my experience it's no more than 50% of the time, and you can gear up for the rain.

As for the Midge, well I may look a bit of a dick with my anti midge gear on but they don't bother me :thumb

As young Den says....Smidge is da kiddy...works for me......and doesn't melt your glasses, nose etc, like the DEET based stuff...Jungle Formula.. etc.

As the kind young gents said, Smidge is the only non DEET one I know of that does the trick. Means the wee bastards are no longer an issue :beerjug:
Unless you forget to put some on :blast
Otherwise, if you can't find any just buy high concentrate DEET but remember if you keep the container in a plastic bag it'll rot the thing. So be careful when spraying under your kilt
