Why does a house seem to be in the ocean?

I have a customer wanting his stock delivered to a house in Portugal. It's in the sticks, not easy to find so he has supplied me with GPS locations for the junction to turn off the road and for his house. I check everything and so put these figures into Google maps which show his house in the bay off the coast of the town of Lagos, Portugal. Bing maps does the same. I'm the Manuel of the Sat-Nav world, I know notheeeng.

Is there some offset that should be applied to GPS locations so that they give you an accurate location on a map such as Google/Bing?

I'm using the format +XX.XXXXXX, -XX.XXXXXX for the latitude north and longitude west. Is that correct? The fact that the location only appears to be around 15 miles out, mainly on longtitude suggests that it is.

My customer has asked a friend to verify their own figures, it still puts them in the Atlantic Ocean.

Anyone help?

Probably using the wrong format for Lat/Long .....or it's predictive of global warming.

Thanks Tim, the map systems are supposed to accept decimal degrees but when I changed it to degrees and decimal minutes it gave what was approximately expected.
