Why does the digital clock on my Dakar run fast?

Its not a huge problem - but I just want to understand why

The digital clock on my Dakar gains about 5mins every 3 weeks or so. I didnt know that digital clocks could do that.

Does this suggest that there is something "screwy" with my electrics - or is the clock just a cheap piece of kit

Thoughts?

Joe

Mine does the same.

If you think that's bad get yourself a cycle computer and check the accuracy of the speedo and milometer:eek:

Think yourself lucky, these are the same BMW electrics that 'run' the braking system of the 1200s

anorak time......................

the crystal in all digital timepieces should vibrate (ooooh) at 32768 cycles per sec. the circuitry divides this by 2, 15 times to arrive at a figure of one (second). try it on your calculator.

obviously any error in the 32768 is divided by 2, 15 times and therefore becomes very small indeed, making digi clocks fecking accurate.

HOWEVER, the accuracy of vibration (oooooh) depends on how accurate the crystal has been cut in the first place, cheap crystal = crap cut = poor timekeeping.

bet you wished you never asked

We have a 2002 GS version and the clock does exactly the same thing. I simply look at my watch before setting off to see how far out it is, then subtract as I ride - saves finding a high-tech matchstick to correct it (yet again).

At least it points to consistent engineering (must be built to ISO9002 standards then...).

Its obvious - you're not riding fast enough to keep up with the rest of the world.

at least you'll live longer, though.

Chisurz,
Blimey, you can afford a watch as well as a bike. Its about 6 years since I last wore a watch. A timeless PB :)
PS Do you live near Reading? If so come a talk bollocks with the big boys on the 15th.

I don't believe the 650 was designed to keep up with the rest of the world, so that leaves plenty of time to ponder on the aspects of the relativity of time between watch and the BMWs clock!

Thanks for the invite Pondboy. Won't be able to do 15th this month, as have a prior invite (free ::beer: near work...), but the Pack Horse isn't far away, so maybe January.

Is it set to Kilometers?
