why don't they wave or acknowledge????

Noticed when riding in France there is much more of a culture of nodding - or sticking a leg out - to both other bikers and also car drivers that make an effort to make way for you (which is much more often than in the UK).

I'm sure I used to get more nods and waves back when I rode a Lambretta, and the bikers who didn't nod were most likely living in a mods v rockers bubble. Back then two wheels was more a lifestyle choice than it is now. Nowadays there are far more people who have two wheeled toys just for sunny weekends who care nothing for camaraderie or etiquette.
I nod to anyone on two wheels (except bicycles and cars about to flip over) and trikes and combos too. That includes twist and go kids, the weekend Harley riding accountants, Goldwing riders, bad ass outlaw bikers, riceburners, even the old codger I nod to every day who never ever nods back.
I don't think it's because we ride GSs that some people don't respond, it's more likely because they're just ignorant cnuts.

why do you want to wave to strangers -

My Parents always warned me " never speak to strangers" so i heed their warning - it's most likely your waving at a pedo ( especially between the months of October and March )

Oh dear, these nasty bikers dont wave to me :tears

GET A LIFE

I dont expect everyone wearing jeans to wave to me when I wear them so why expect others to wave just because they 'might' have the brains to ride as superior a machine as me ?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear - Its not a club - go do one :dabone

Just HAD to respond to this one (as its a subject Ive brought up many timnes in the past). Im an advanced rider and a police trained 'on' and 'off ' roader. Ive been riding for 20+ years and Ive ridden all sorts of stuff in all sorts of places...at all sorts of speds etc etc. Its taken me this long to afford exactly what I wanted and Ive now got a brill mandarin GS. It was, without doubt the biggest initial shock of owning a GS when I too found that many of my biking pals out there simply STOPPED nodding . At first I found it a bit of a disappointment, especially after all these years. Personally I nod to all and sundry. To me a biker is a biker - I respect everyoen out there on two whels (well - apart from those individuals who razz around on go peds in shorts and no gloves (!!!!!) - because they just give us all a bad name). Bikers are without doubt a silent majority and we all need to thank each other that we continue to keep the spirit alive. As for those who think of us as ponces, rich biggots or 'fake' bikers - well , thats up to them. Its just a shame that all bikers cant be as open as us. I dont mind what you ride - Im glad to see you on the road. Have a nice day y'awl ...... :bounce1

Hello all,

Having waited for 6 long weeks for my new 1200 GS, why don't other bikers acknowledge you when you wave/nod or flash your lights. Being a owner of various jap bikes when ever i acknowledged others i would always have the same back, but not now!!. Do you guys get the same cold treatment????
Funnily enough, I posted a question about this around a year ago... I've had the same problem lately again, I'm just back from a nice 3 days and 800(ish) miles touring/camping in the NW of Scotland on my KTM950.
I've always done the waving thing but it does seems that I'm now in a big minority, most motorcyclists don't wave even when they've got time to do it, I've also got to say that absolutely no oilhead GS's (over the last 3 days) acknowledged me at all - is it because I is on a KTM?
Anyway, fsck it, I'll continue to wave to everybody on two wheels and I encourage evrybody else to do the same!

I don't agree that Harley riders don't wave... Just after I passed my test (some 25 years ago) I went on my first 'real' trip. I was riding my CX500 (remember those?), wearing my sparkling new leather jacket, shiny new helmet and, of course, I had a bright yellow 'Sam Brown' belt on (mandatory according to my instructor). I couldn't wait to come across my first fellow motorcyclists so I could give a wave and feel a warm, cosy feeling of belonging to an elite group. I saw first one and then another and another. A group of cheery chaps out for a ride coming in the opposite direction. I raised my hand in a formal wave. As we got closer I realised they were riding Harleys, wearing cut off denim jackets, open face helmets etc. Every single one of them waved... Their wave started about the level of the petrol tank and ended high in the air and involved the first two fingers of their hands extended in a 'V'...

Hey, same to you pal!
The thing is they don't wave when I'm on my airhead GS either - maybe they're afraid to let go of the bars?

If I were you, I would concentrate on more meaningful manifestations of human warmth.

It doesn't bother me though as the good news is that I never attract the interest of Mr Plod and even with my old girl I can still piss off most rice rocket ponses in their pink dayglo leathers with the white booties by stuffing them up the inside on fast bends and roundabouts as nearly all of them can only ride fast in a straihgt line.

So you're the prat who overtakes on the inside! You won't be getting a wave from me then. :mcgun :mcgun

I first started riding in 1969. Everybody waved, just like what has been already said, there were alot less bikes back then. A 350 was a nice size bike. We, my brother and I, had 125 kawasaki 2-stroke Touring bike, hey with electric start. We used to do wheel stands on it.

Anyways, riding around town on my 1200, most of the time a get a wave back, except from Harley riders. Although if I am on a ferry with one, there fine to talk too.

I have waved to guys on scooters and half of them do not wave back.

There also is a difference in town and out.

People are a lot more frendly on the road while travelling.

I also wave to ladies on Shop Riders with their little dogs. Well only the GS version!

I believe it's because most riders know that 1200 owners may not wave back as they could be busy looking down to see if their warning light may have come on.

OOOHH Beach, hit them where it hurts, why dont you. :thumb

Re Harley riders,

We were up the west coast this year and were passed by a precession of Harley’s, must have been a Harley club meet but there were tones on them. Anyway we started waving at first but by about the tenth one with no wave back we stopped waving and started giving them the finger. I wasn’t worried because if they started any trouble I would have set my wife on them.

Rideout protocol is that only the last man (sweeper) waves. HDOC are very, very anal about this.

I know because I did it meself years ago :(
