Why get dealers to fit gear?

Just a quick question from someone who's not done this before. BMW dealer has given me a quote for an F800GS with various things fitted: engine guard, touring screen etc etc. every item looks expensive compared to bits I can get mail order from other suppliers - the only difference being that I would need to fit them myself. I'm not a complete plonk with a spanner. But haven't worked on bikes before either. So is it reasonable for a new biker to order a load of bits and fit them? It'd save me a huge pile of dosh.

I say yes, just buy the bits and fit them yourself. If something is hard or difficult to fit someone on here may have done a step by step thread, just do a quick search and read up on the bits you want to fit. If you can't find it then just ask, people may take the piss a bit, but you will get the info you need in the end.

Raggedyruss, for the type of journey you are planning it is essential you feel confident with minor repairs and know your way round the bike. There will be nothing complicated in fitting accessories if they are made for the bike. A warning though, fit a sheet across the front of the bike before working in the area. I lost a small washer which bounced and vanished, its like a black hole under the tank and behind the radiator. It also protects the paint if your spanners slip. To do any work on you bike you will need a set of sockets and drivers to suit the new cap screws and bolt heads. You will need these on your trip, sets are readily available and are not too big. My Leatherman came with a driver and sockets which fit all the cap screws.

thanks for the advice. Looking forward to getting intimate with my bike.:kissy2

Agree with the others, DIY, you will get better knowledge of the bike as well as running repairs if needed. Also, screws/bolts do sometimes work their way off, use 'Lock tight', should do the trick!

Further to this, if you need help, use this forum! Really helpful people!

Not sure where abouts you are but if you live near me I have a garage full of tools and kettle if you need a hand fitting anything:)

Hi tom. fabulous offer. thanks. I'm in the south west though, near bristol.

BMW asked me the same question when i order my F800GS. I told them that is would fit them myself. A week later i got a call saying they had fitted them by mistake

Definately do them yourself. BMW charge something like £40/hour.

Go to ebay now and buy a star-key set (or whatever the technical name is). You will need these.

Have a go yourself or with a freind who has some mechcanical knowledge, fitting screens , under guards crash bars ect . is within the realms of most folk with some common sense, just take your time :thumb2
