Why is my bevel oil black?

Can anyone tell me why the oil drained from my paralever bevel drive is black? I use exactly the same oil in my gearbox and this come out looking pretty much like new. The bevel drive is recently rebuilt and has only got about1200 miles on it. Could it be debris from a seal bedding in? There are no leaks and no noises/clunks. Not noticed this on my other paralever….

When I’ve used Castrol in mine it turns really dark, probably not black but very dark, switched to Lucas now and that doesn’t discolour.

I was told that the inside of the bevel box is sprayed with something that stops condensation while in storage,
this comes off in the oil you will find it becomes lighter each time you change the oil.

Someone might have put moly in it to help lubrication/stop wear and it's coloured the oil.

Why do you worry about this stuff ??

Does it feel like gear oil ??

Does it smell like gear oil ??

Does the assembly move freely ??

Call It Good and Move On !!

Oh and probably a build additive Just in case you are still not happy! I use Graphogen as taught by the master Guru @Proff

I’m not particularly worried about it, I’m just interested as to what is making it go black, it’s not as if it’s getting really hot or being contaminated with combustion residues.

Possibly some residue from the rebuild or the bedding in process.

It’s a very small volume of oil and you’ll never get it all out so the old contaminates the new.

change it out a couple of times over a couple of thousand miles and it’ll eventually come out clean.
