Why not just disconnect the CO pot?

I'm slowly working out how the fueling works on my r1100gs. I 've done a lot of reading and it seems the factory setting of the CO pot is for 1.5% CO (13.94 AFR), but the bikes seem to run better up to 2.0% CO (13.77 AFR). I also believe that removing the CO pot causes the ECU to set the CO to 1.8% (13.82% AFR).

So my question is why not just disconnect the CO pot? No need to find an accurate CO tester to set it up and you'd know that it was going to run at 1.8% CO, which is neither too rich or too lean?

Or am I missing something here? Does disconnecting the CO pot also make the ECU run the bike in some restricted mode ?
 
The co pot only affects idle and low speed running. If you disconnect it, the ecu can't set the output to 1.8% or, indeed, anything else as it doesn't know the engine condition, fuel pressure etc etc. If you have a lambda sensor, it can correct for all the variables but the earlier systems can only guess according to a default map.

If you don't think it's right, get it checked with a good co meter. It's also worth testing the co as you very slowly increase throttle to about 1800 rpm. This is where the tps adjustment makes a big difference.

Ride it.

If it's better, leave it undone.

If it's worse, reconnect it :thumb2

It's all theory at the moment, I have the bike set up using the CO pot and a CO meter at 1.5% CO, it was a bit of fiddle working out how sensitive the CO pot was (adjust it wait 30 sec to take reading etc). The bike runs OK, I just sat there afterwards wondering why people didn't just disconnect the pot and let the ECU default the CO setting to 1.8%. Sounds like removing it effects other things too?
 
"98 1100--pulled the CCP--runs richer, lowers the fuel milage but no more flat spots, herky-jerky running. I LIKE IT!
No emission stations here--might be a big problem getting to pass with the CCP out--simple enough to plug back in
