Why the divide?

I tried a 1200 for 3 days, blinding bike to ride, had the chequebook handy and full at the time, despite my own policy of not buying new models in the first year of production, all I can say is that it didn't give me that "grin" as I walked up to it, nor when I walked away from it, but then I don't think an 1150GS would either...

When they bring out a 1200GSA, I'll probably be at the front of the queue:)

The "divide" is bollox, brought about by members* with too much time on their hands:rolleyes:

* take that word anyway you want:beerjug:

No idea why the divide. I've had an 1150 and a 1200. They are both great bikes, both make me grin but the 1200 makes me grin more than the 1150 did by the time I sold it. Each to their own.

Paragon has a perfectly valid point about wanting to work on the bike. Its not relevant for me because I am just incompetent; anything I work on is guaranteed to go pear shaped (people have tried to teach me "Oh its simple" but its obviously not in my nature). I can check the oil and pump up the tyres and thats as far as it goes.

Mind you some said the 1150 was going to be too complicated to work on when it came out so perhaps the 1200 may not be as difficult as feared.

I like the looks (many don't), the performance (not relevant to many and the 1150 has a more linear delivery) and the handling (but the 1150 is more planted). I think the screen and ergonomics are a lot better and I like the fuel economy and having an accurate speedo (but most of those could be sorted on an 1150 for not too much cost).

Am I pleased I changed? Yes (but see fuel pump posts). Is the 1150 a bad bike? - of course not, its a bloody ace bike. Vive la difference.

who gives shit what you ride.

My sentiments exactly!!!!

Most bike purchases are based on emotion ( especially at 10 grand ) so go buy what does it for you.

Take the constructive advice and enjoy the process of riding/fettling/washing/ etc.

Everybody has their on reasons, thats why there is a market for assorted biscuits!!!!!

THAT IS WHY WE ARE DIVIDED - bet he's got a 1200

No he's man enough for a Butch 998. I already thought he was a t*sser by his first reply, he's just much confirmed that opinion.

Ask a question, receive a totally irrelevant answer and now he's upset. Go cry in the corner little boy.
As the saying goes, you are either a t*sser or a liar, bet you are both:D

My life is hardly goung to be affected by what you think !! But for one who seems to be asking the opinions of others on what bike to buy , you seem to be very opinionated. So yes, I do think you are trolling ... big time

Strangely enough , I was able to make my own decisions on what to buy, without having to ask "virtual friends". If you have test ridden both bikes, then buy the one you want !!

I for one, wouldn't enter onto a site, and then promptly try and alienate the readership. On that basis alone, I think you fall into the troll status.

If you want a sensible discussion, how about trying the search button first, and then coming back with educated comments.

No, I don't own a 1200. But no doubt they are great bikes. As I said I bought a GS for mile muching / alpine passes / two up stuff. And with 9k KMs this year it does it well.

But neither my ADV nor the 1200 will ever be sportsbikes .... but they are fun bikes ...

Go away, grow up, read some stuff, and come back when you are no longer so ignorant.

Ollie

Like other have said ride them back to back if at all possible.

Me I came off a sports bike and think the 1200GS is a fine machine.
Can scratch pretty well when in Wales.
Is invisible to plod ('specially in Wales)
Covers big miles without arse ache
Covers big miles without backache
Is good for a ton up on the motorway

No this is definately the best all round bike I have owned. It really has brought fun back to riding at 60 - 80 mph when on the twisties. Whereas the sports bikes just demand more speed to get the same thrills, and this hacks off non bikers, the police and the courts.

I may be new, does that mean I should accept your attitude:confused:

To the others, thanks for replies.:beerjug:

Ollie

Enjoy your biking what ever you ride:) I've been after a BMW for a good few years, could always afford them but could never lift them!!! At last one I could move around fairly easily 1200GS. Girlie GS it might be in the eyes of some but what the heck I bought it for ME not anyone else.

Fine, misperceptions on both sides . My posts, until the troll one, were not aggressive.

You asked why on earth would anyone buy a 1150 when the 1200 is fast / better on spec on paper.
I replied because the the 1150 is a better real world bike than a sportbike, which is why I bought one.

I've never ridden a 1200 and assume from the comments on this board that they are a step up from the 1150. However i love my Adventure, it does everything i want it to do. As I explained. But it's not a balls out power monster. But it is a great bike, and handles well considering.

I'm not going to buy a 1200, as I have a Buell for fun, and the Duke for when I want to go all race rep. I am lucky. I'm not looking for the bike to do all things adequately.

It was you who "dissed" my poor old 998s. I am sure that you are a track day hero, and can ride rings around me. So of course you don't have to take my views or attitude. Just as i don't have to accept yours. Your inital response to mind was hostile. What did you expect back?

The divide will only appear on a forum. When a few riders get together to go riding, no one debates this kind of thing. Once the riding starts the bikes brand or performance is not an issue, as the best riders will ride better reguardless of their bike.

Abso ...fecking ... lutely

And who define what a "better" rider is !!!

Caught myself nodding at scooter riders the other day .... note to myself to correct such behaviour

And what's wrong with scooters now?!? *opening-another-can-of-worms*

I love my little Gilera Runner, and it takes me to work as fast as the GS... But nobody nods at me when I'm on the Runner :(

I think its an unwritten rule

1) No nodding at scooter riders
2) No nodding at anything under 125cc
3) Take a gamble of Harley riders ... if their handlebars are 2X the width of their shoulders then they are too "street" to nod ...

You have never ridden a 1200 why comment you can't offer any comparison.

As for a Track day hero
Became interested in GS's after a couple of 1150 riding nutters ran rings round me, I don't think that cap fits.

Enuff said.

B*||*cks... :D :D
1) I nod at scooter riders all the time; I want them to grow up n know that biking is a brotherhood they want to be part of, not a bunch of stuck up t*553rs... :D
2) See 1) They'll grow up one day, and then they'll overtake you... better be nice from the start. :D
3) I *REALLY* wave at Hardley-Movingsome riders, sometimes I put my feet forward too... I mainly wave because I know they can't! If the let go of the handlebars, the vibes will make it vibrate so badly they'll never catch the bars again...  :D :D ;)

My tuppence worth.

Hey Ollie
I’m sure you’ll be happy whichever choice you make 1150, ADV or 1200. They’re all wonderful and completely different from the sports bikes you’ve ridden in the past.
18 months ago I was very much like yourself …. An out and out sports bike freak who made the change over.
My priorities at the time were for a comfortable, reliable and low maintenance commuter. I chose the ADV pretty much on looks, taking it as read that reliability from a BMW would be without question….. 60,000 trouble free miles later I’m sat here typing this with a grin from ear to ear - I’ve never ridden any bike I’ve owned in the past as much as this.
But all this is pretty irrelevant; the biggest eye opener for me has been the level of service you receive from BMW.
That’s worth its weight in gold!!!

Ollie,

You can keep you bit of the bad day, I can't be arsed.

You actually asked why people liked the 1150, not for a "What Bike" comparrison test! Sorry I spoke when I wasn't fully up on all the info you wanted.

And I think you'd find that a search would have yielded you all the info that these kind people have added to the thread

Hope what ever bike you buy , you will be happy with. They are great bikes, and the paper spec is not matched by real world enjoyment ...
