Why the GS12 is so good...

This morning left 6:40am Fort William , arrived home Avening Gloucestershire 2:20pm. Seven half hours including two stops forty five minutes in total.

Four days hooning around Isle of Skye, KinLochleven (Scotsburgring), Inverness, Nairn, Tomintoul, Grantham on Spey, Braemar, Pitlochry and to finish it off a belting dice back to Spean Bridge with a yellow R1100sport that must have been a ex-racer as he was one of quickest bikers I've ever come across.

Perfect weather thanks to weather forecasters predicting dull days and rain/snow by today...

10,000 miles on front Conti Trail Attack, 7000 on rear both nearing end but amazing tyres.

Amazing bike (09' with all top spec stuff). 51.3mpg overall since I've had it..

Sorry to report but my shaft drive is still working.. :D

That explains why you think the guy on the R1100S was quick....:augie
 
Dream on Mr Bitter. I used to race a TZ350 and got in MCN race results, did you?

I just don't gun it down the straights to waste fuel:augie:augie

Spooky. I'm literally sitting in front of laptop planning my route from Glos to Fort Will then around the Highlands & Islands for a week. And, I'm going to get Trail Attacks fitted before I go too.

Thanks for the added explanation. I've noticed that quite a few racers, including some TT winners I've ridden with, are dead slow on the road. :augie
 
Did a similar trip last year.....the final day, Aviemoore 9am to Thornbury in South Glos 5.15pm.....2009 GS.......final drive shaft also still working ok

I did PM you but it said you 'don't accept private messages' so didn't get too far, but yes, any advice on roads in the Highlands particularly would be appreciated. Plan to do Mull, Skye, Isle of Harris and the road which runs along the length of the north coast but will have plenty of time for more :)

Am on my second set of TAs and they suit the GS/GSA perfectly. :)

did circumnavigation of mull a few years ago 120 milesish fantastic didnt see anyone else going the same way as us. watch out for locals coming the otherway who dont expect to see you. roads are very narrow if you have to stop there is often a 6 inch drop off the tarmacfor your left foot . great hairpins between Tobermorey and Calgary. Camp on beach overlooking Iona at Fidden. go with a full tank you may not get fuel especially weekend. great chip shop betty hill on north coast take the trip to cape wrath (white knuckle minibus trip) John o Groats is dump but i suppose you have to go

Hmm. Several people have mentioned this. Deffo one to watch out for as will also have pillion on board and she's only been on a bike for about 5 mins in her life hence really don't want to give her a scare.

Skye is a one day trip. A82 out of Fort William a few miles then left turn on A87 to Kyle of Lochalsh, over the bridge then same road number to Portree then up to Uig (both on Isle of Skye). Back down right to the bottom to Armadale, catch ferry back to Mallaig then A830 to Fort William. Ferry just under £16 but worth it to do A830. Watch out for one tightening left hander on way back.

Day 2 go to Inverness on A82 north then A96 to Nairn (boring but..), A939 down to Grantown on Spey, same road south thro Tomintoul to Ballater, A93 to Braemar, Glenshee then Blairgowrie then A927 to A9 to Pitlochry and north towards Newtonmore then turn off to A86 back to Fort William.

Make sure you get a few laps of Kinlochleven in around the loch, best anticlockwise.

skye

another good way onto skye. from shiel bridge take glenelg road. cracking views across loch duich. follow road to fork . its worth going left to explore all the way to corran. and the glen elg brochs. the right fork takes you to little ferry £5 3years ago if its still there nice remote road on skye takes you back towards bridge.

I took that ferry last summer, and me and 5 mates will be on it next month again!

For my money , its the best way on to Skye - the way the Cuillins open up in front of you as you wind down the single track towards the Broadford road is bloody awesome!
