I'm taking my old windows PC over to Spain and will need some sort of Wi-FI adapter to connect to interweb.

Anyone any experience of any decent *cheap* ones?

What version of windows are you running, and which service pack is installed?

Do you REALLY need wifi? - is it your router that you're connecting to? if so, have you thought about using powerline adapters to connect up?

Good question!

Er.... not been used for about 5 years since I changed to an iMac, so I would guess XP?

Have yet to dig it out of loft.

are you talking Wi-Fi adapter for connecting to router/modem connected to a line in the house in Spain
or a mobile dongle - connects over the mobile network
if it's the latter then get it in Spain any providers in your country will have roaming data charges when you go to spain
(assuming your coming from UK/Ireland) if you go for powerline adapters you may need to buy locally as well (different socket types here and there)

It's to connect to the wi-fi in the house. All my other computer gear has it built in, but this pc is a bit older.

it's much of a much-ness then for WiFi adapters there's a standard that they have to stick to, ideally buy an adapter from the same manufacturer as the router but that's not all that important
pretty much any of the main brand names should do it just be sure to check the manufacturers website before purchasing it, whilst the install CD mightn't have the driver the website may do
personally I'm using a Netopia 3d reach adapter for about 4 years with issues only starting to come up - but I don't know if they're still sold
I hear Zyxel make reasonibly priced and usable adapters but have no experience with them
and with Belkin lies the path to tears - I would avoid like the plague
net-gear are alright but can get buggy with other routers
TP-Link are cheap and usually quality again no experience with them

all of your other devices with inbuilt wifi will have the cheapest nastiest wifi chip that the manufacturer could source in China.

Just spend a fiver on something from Amazon, 7dayshop etc.

Here you go, a fiver with free P&P and 81 of the 115 reviews give it 5 stars
