Gelände/Strasse off-road/on-road
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gelände/Strasse off-road/on-road, refers to a series of BMW motorcycles produced from the late 1980's to the present. The first "GS" models were produced in 800c.c. flat-twin configurations, later upgraded to 1000cc machines in an air-cooled boxer setup.

A special "Paris-Dakar" edition was offered in addition to the base model. These early "airhead" machines have a defined cult following among adventure motorcyclists. in 1995 the introduction of the next generation oil-head model signaled a new beginning in BMW's lean into modern adventure models, with a succession of larger displacement models following, culminating in the new R1200GS. This model has modern engine management, ABS braking, and much more power than the humble original air-cooled models.

The new R1200GS has tackled the weight issue that some disliked with the previous GS machines. Although more powerful, the 1200 is approximately 1/10th lighter (dry weight) than the older machines. The R1200GS has a mad as a March hare doppelganger in the R1200GS Adventure model. The Adventure model is everything the base 1200 is and more for the committed back and beyond riders.

end.

I'm no expert on the BMW history bit, but it seemed a fair apraisal of the GS, might upset a few old school types :rob not mentioning the 1150's But they are old hat now, water under the bridge and all that :nenau :D

Pity it's wrong?

Gelände/Strasse or G/S only applied to the earlier Mono Levers (80 to mid 87). The G/S became GS from the introduction of the Paralever onwards. The S in the GS meaning sport.

How fecking sad am I?

And follow they did, like lambs to the slaughter. :mmmm

Big Mad Wolf (BMW) lured them in 1200 world and gobbled them all up :D
