I have just fitted a pair of Wilbers shocks to my GSA ( 630/640 ), with the hydraulic preload adjuster for the rear.

The shocks were second hand, but the setup was very similar to what I wanted ( +- 10% ). I had no instructions, but followed a thread here for fitting, and found another one that had the initial damper rebound settings, so good so far...

My question is concerning the initial position of the hydraulic pre load adjuster. Does it come out of the box set to a mid-position, to the min ( least preload) position , or somewhere else ? Anyone recall where theirs was at before they started fettling ? I want to get all settings back to their ex-factory values, or at least as close I can.

i am very happy with my rear preload set to minimum when solo. i crank it up slightly for luggage, and more for pillion.

Look up Wilbers on the interweb and give them a ring. The British distributor is Everyaccessory, and I've always found them very helpful.

I understand they set the ring on the shock according to the weight etc given when ordering.

The one on mine I adjusted back to give more adjustment via the hand control. The hand control you adjust to give the correct sag for you and luggage. The correct sag I recall as being very firm (30mm or something but check) so I run mine a bit softer for general use and expect to wind it up only when hard core riding is required.

Thanks all.

I backed it all the way off this morning befroe leaving for work, it's now fine.

Andres, Cookie, I had seen your excellent threads; I used them both when installing the shocks and doing the initial set up; it was just the hydraulic preload adjuster that was the question. Much detail on where and how to mount it, but not on what initial setting to use. I placed it on the foot rest hanger, facing rearwards, but with the adjuster body on the upper side ( label facing down). It is very easy to reach from the saddle like that. I just can't see what is on the label, so have to count the number of turns.

First impression is that it is much smoother, especially with TKC80s, it show up most where the M20 degenerates under the M25 flyover. Smooooth ...
