Just had the maiden ride on my latest acquisition, a G650X-Challenge, and the air-shock is definitely not for me.
I am now on a quest to replace the windbag spring with a coil unit with adjustable compression, rebound and preload.
Wilbers have a direct replacement shock unit for the bike (part #642-842-00), but I don't seem to be able to find UK outlet for such a part.
Any help will be gratefully received......

It's a bitch isn't it? On that steep downhill on Sunday afternoon it was trying to launch me over the bars:(

The X-Country has a regular spring rear if you can't get a Wilbers.

Daithi put one on from an X-Country (the original one not the now even lower one) and he was happy with the setup. I was thinking of going down that route (probably should have ).

I wasn't keen on the air shock when I first got the bike. But now its growing on me.

You only really notice its a weird air shock when braking. Give the bike a handful of front brake and it feels like you are being ejected, but throw in a foot of rear as well and it tempers it somewhat. Its become automatic now.

But I have found that on the trails, the air shock performs really well.

Suggest sticking with it for a good few rides to see if it grows on you.

OK, thanks for the replies...... and the shock still has to go WindyC:D

I have had two prices returned today:-
Wilbers 842-642-00 fully adjustable unit = £735.
Ohlins BM636 fully adjustable unit = £495.

Cole, have you a pride of the Hyperpro unit please? If not, I can call them on Monday.

For £235 difference, the Ohlins may be favored......:augie 'cause that is £235 to spend on tatty-bling!;)

Anymore information will be gratefully received.......:thumb2

And have been really really impressed by the setup to be honest. I have beaten the crap out of it over 30,000 miles already, about half of that off road across Mongolia, Tajikistan, Siberia et al, at 70mph - with loads of luggage. Very very predictable and confidence inspiring.

I believe the catalogue number is BM06-1AD for the XC

And if you are ever going to carry luggage, I think the change is a must.

I'd agree with Cole and the Hyperpro if you are going to do any long distance riding / carrying baggage. But for spanking the local trails, nowt wrong with the air shock IMHO.

I've owned an HP2 and the air shock was fine but on the 650 it sucks big time.

Changing to an Olins shock is the best money I have spent on the 650.

Right, I'll give you my reason why the air shock is not for me!
Although it has not been on the trails yet, this bike will be used extensively in Wales on some fairly tricky trails, ie, trails that Land Rovers can not use due to being single track or steep incline/decline.
If there will be the need for me to make a dab, as soon as my foot makes contact with the floor, the weight being transfer to my foot is counteracted by the air shock extending due to the lesser weight on it, therefore increasing the height of the bike.:eek
Sure on fast flowing trails, no problem, so Salisbury Plain or the Home Countie's byways would not be a problem, but on a single track declining harpin the standard set-up is not going to work for me.

I have a price from an Ohlins supplier local to me and at £499, I'm going for it.
Thanks very much for the views above.:thumb2

Wot he said.....................happens all the time to me in Wales or Yorkshire

But down south, where the trails are less technical the airshock is ok

Timpo, now you know what my excuse is for taking so long getting down those steep rocky descents on the 1st French advrider rally, shitting meself that I couldn't touch the floor should I need to!! :blagblah :D

But down south, where the trails are less technical the airshock is ok

Here we go again the old North South divide... It's so much tougher up here bleat bleat...:D

Well let me tell you where the councils have been slow in grading our southern trails we often have to encounter puddles where they've not put drainage in, low branches where they've not cut back to H&S specification and even kerbs to ride down when they've not put in a proper exit ramp at a trail end.

Last weekend the trails where deadly with all the fallen leaves !

At first I didn't think this was a problem at all and wondered what the fuss was about but I was running with too little air in the shock . After playing with it last week to the point where I am happy with it (only on road so far) I now have exactly the same problem where dabbing = ejection and suddenly I would be less happy taking it off road (which i've yet to do)............surprising because I didnt notice it at all when riding Gaz's at the Llongollen event on a couple of lanes, although they were easy ones.

Unfortunately i've already spent my dosh on "bling tat" and dont have any left over to change the shock ;)
