whilst riding home from work this morning, I noticed that the oil temp was going from 4 to 8 bars up and down wildly.

Have recently changed tyres, plugs, oil and filter, gear oil, final drive oil and ate salad with new potatoes for tea.

Sounds like a sensor/wiring/guage fault but never seen it mentioned before.

Might / might not be related, but about once a year I have to dribble some ACF50 into the connector block under the black plastic cover just under the petrol tank on the L/H side. This makes the fuel gauge display " more accurate". I wonder if this block supplies the power to the temp. readout as well. 1150, what bike you got? It helps if we know!

Might have been the potatoes though.

Oil pessure.

Don't eat any more spuds.

its a 2001 R1150GS, currently fitted with R1150RT engine and gearbox that has done about 13,000 miles (5000 last month)

rest of bikes on about 90,000 miles (original engine/gearbox perfect, just had the RT one lying around and wanted to check it out)

I only have an 1100 manual, are the workshop CDs on E bay any use ?

or where else can I get a wiring diagram from ?

It sounds like an intermittent connection.
Just had a look through my Haynes manual. What Haynes describe as a pressure sensor(right next to the oil cooler return pipe) is what looks to me like a temperature sensor (just removed it from my spare 1150 motor).
I would expect an oil pressure switch in the sump area close to the pump.
Have also looked through the Haynes wiring diagram.
The temp sensor has a 2 way plug going into the wiring loom (under the tank i would guess) and connects to pins 7 (goel) and 22 (31el) at the Motronic.
Clean/reseat of the 2 pin connector would be 1st on my list, then the RID connector.
Incidentally, with the 1150RT motor fitted (an extra 10 BHP),what is the bikes performance like?.And were there any problems in the fitting.
Cheers,Col.

1150 motors

The nmain prob discoverd bu a friend who did this was the exhuast manifold is different, two outlets on 1150, only one on 1150 gs, head swap possibly.

thanks for that, yes the RT engine seems a bit quicker, I used to get around 125 mph and now it pulls 130 pretty easy (indicated obviously)

The actual swap is straightforward but horribly time consuming.

I accidently left the RT clutch hose on so now its not routed very neatly at the master cylinder and as mentioned, the heads had to be changed.

Sold the 3 stud ones pretty easily though and am so tight that I re-used the old head gaskets (!!!!???)

Gearbox feels the same although probably the cruchiest one I have come across. (miles better now with semi synthetic oil)
have tried for some photos but not quite up to speed with system
