1200 battery much smaller and lower capacity - would not recommend it

I have just rung my local-ish BM dealer (Vines) and they have told me that the batteries are the same - and it will work ?
Who is right ?

why would anyone want to fit a barely adequate 1200 battery to an 1150 that has room for a decent sized one? 
if anyone can work out how to do it the other way round, let me know.

As has already been said here... they are not the same. 1200 battery is smaller. Get the proper size... try an Odyssey battery, works well for me

I got a gel one from motobins (£44 + 5.95 PP +VAT) but sent it back as it wasn't a German make I knew (looked like a Chinese jobby). Swapped it for the lead acid 20Ah one for the same price/dimensions which was much better and German. Got some acid for about £2 from a local motor factor, charged it up and voila!
OK it might need a bit of maintenance, but it is no biggy to check when the seat is off and it's a whole 1A more with probably better CCA's..
Service/swap from motobins was fine and no charge.

So you go from a Gel one (Ideal for a GS 'cos they don't leak if you drop the bike) to an acid one just because of the country they were made in?

Not just that. Gel batteries can have issues with dead spots so I read. And I wanted a 20Ah one not 19Ah.
Not all batteries are the same, cheap batteries use cheap metals and chemicals, and as a battery uses chemical reactions to produce energy, this affects the quality and longevity of it.
Buy cheap buy twice.
As for dropping bikes, dropped loads of bikes with SLA batteries in and never had any problems with acid leak (not that I am a bad rider just when I was younger). Also, the GS doesn't generally lie horizontal when dropped, batteries aren't filled to the top and they do have sealing caps on...
Of course I would have a Varta/BMW gel battery or an Odessy, but would rather have a branded SLA than an unbranded gel.

Well said -If only everyone was as sensible with batteries, instead of always choosing the cheap option. Price really does make a difference in what you get. I've known plenty of genuine bmw batteries that have lasted more than 5 years

agreed Steptoe. The OE fitment battery has just given up the ghost after nearly 8 years on my 1150GS and no optimate in sight. It would probably still be ok - if I'd ridden it / started it at all in the last 8 months.
And I'd been offered a reasonable priced 1200 battery. So just wondered - hence the thread.
I reckon I'll just get another BM (are they just rebranded Varta batteries ?) battery or Varta.
I notice that my original battery is only 12V-14 Amp, but from this other thread

And the new BMW replacement battery is more powerful ?
Now this question may be stupid.
Why would I need a more powerful battery ? The old one coped ok with ABS, heated grips etc. for a considerable length of time.
