Hi guys,

Does anybody know for absolute certain if a pre water-cooled RT top box will fit the 2014 water cooled bike?

Central locking not fitted to the old box..

So let me get this right...If I can find a good used pre LC top box, can I adapt or modify it to work with along with the new LC central locking?

Search me Gov, I do know someone here modified a Givi box with remote control to work on a RT LC. I fear the old BMW top box may be difficult to modify, but I do not know.
When I get round to fitting a topbox, I'll get a Givi with optional remote control and modify that. Apparently it is achieveable..
Dave.

My RT-LC hasn't arrived yet but having talked over the phone to the dealer today, he advises me not to get the early box as it is different, he says the pre-LC box can only be removed from the bike by emptying the box completely then undoing a clamp from inside the box before it can be removed, where as the RT-LC box can be removed easily complete with it contents via an external locking lever. I'm not sure how important this is if I use removable bags, but I'd like to know if what he tells me is correct.

Happy New Year everybody!

Sounds like he's taking you for a mug. There isn't a clamp on the inside of the old box. Is it Astles by any chance

No it's not Astles,

I see that there are one or two pre-LC T/Bxs on ebay at around £350.00 which seems eminently more sensible than almost a grand just for a t/box.

The plot thickens!

£350 seems a bit steep for a second hand box that only cost £430 new

The dealer is talking Bullshit, my old topbox fits straight on my LC. It's no different than fitting it onto previous RT's.
I'm not sure which dealer your going too, York, Rotherham or Grimsby, but it might be worth a trip up to Shipley for more informed advice.

Top Boxes on flee-bay are holding a premium at the moment, I suppose the take up on the new boxes is slow, If Santa has been busy dropping the new boxes off, there might be a few more becoming available soon.

A few German dealers have got the new top box for about 450 €, which is a substantial saving over UK list and they will ship to the UK.

After stripping one of these down recently to get the barrel out(no key) I can't see how you could modify it to work with central locking-- there is hardly any room between the inner/outer skins of the box to mount a servo motor, no mounting points or power supply in there etc etc. and lots of mechanical bits to be moved to operate the claws underneath.
Old style box would simply mean you have another key on your keyring to lock the box

Many thanks Tony, and others!

I did exactly as you said and rang Jeffries who concurred with you, in that the boxes are interchangeable, but I can pay more if I want the central locking and additional incorporated brake light.

This forum and it's members are so useful for cutting through the bullsh-t.

Thanks guys.
