Printing a picture fom your photosmart printer a photograph compared with the real 35 mm enlargement. but even a photograph downloaded from a site that has been when printed out its just not the same is it?
 
Yes, it will, in time and as multi-megapixel CCD's come down in price.

I studied photography at art college and it's extremely satisfying mucking about with all the chemicals and spending ages dodging about with various bits of card on wire to burn in or hold back bits......

But then Photoshop and similar can be used to give the same effects, and probably much easier.

As for the quality, yes, absolutely it will be as good- film has a grain size depending on the ISO rating and once you've exceeded that in terms of pixels, the quality will be better.
