Will it fit ?

I am starting to put out a few feelers to engineer a change from my R1100R to a R1100GS. It needs to be done discreetly because if my wife catches on it won't happen.

As much as I would like a newer R1150GS, finance dictates that it will be the older 1100 model.

The first problem I want to ensure is that an R1100GS will fit into the outbuilding my R1100R is stored in. This is a very narrow doorway and is almost an interference fit.

Does anyone live near me that might be able to come over and try their R1100GS ?

This is where I live: go to www.greatbedwyn.com and click the "Where is great bedwyn" button

S'got to be worth a pint. - Wadworths naturally.

Thanks

How far (in time) from Bath?
I might be able to help tomorrow (Sunday) - can't imagine how you explain (to the missus) a stranger on an 1150GS riding into your outhouse! anyway, don't be such a pussy; when I decided I was having a GS I told SWMBO straight out there & then. Mind, she was asleep at the time.......

Thanks for replies chaps.

Ralphy: from Bath, it's about 50-60 minutes - quite a nice run along the A4 through Chippenham, Calne & Marlborough.

From Bath I guess it's about 35-45 miles. How does this sound ?

If this hasn't put you off, you'd be welcome pretty much anytime after about 1pm - we're busy in the morning.

Gauloises - you are welcome as well, but I fear Ralphy may wish to get his bike OUT again afterwards :D

If either of you can make it, pls let me know and I will email you off list with detailed directions and phone numbers etc.

If tomorrow is a problem, some other time would be fine - I'm not in a mad hurry to change, but probably over the next 3-6 months.

cheers

Thanks v. much for turning up to try the big squeeze - so near and yet so far.

This top bloke rode up from Bournemouth to see if I can squeeze a GS into my outhouse/shed thing.

It almost went in - I haven't given up, but it meant turning the handlebars sideways. It may mean taking a hacksaw to the door frame to squeeze the handguards through.

I have to say this was one of the horniest GS's I've seen and my two eldest think he's fresh back from the PAris-Dakar because of the sponsorship decals.

The sound coming up the road made me think there was a small helicopter flying over head, before my wife said, well if it's a helicopter, it's just landed in our drive !

What a bike though - want one want one want one. Do SPC take children in part-exchange ?

Cheers - Gates - muchos gracias

I'm afraid NONE of the BMW dealers will take children in part-ex. (believe me, I tried!!)

Got rid of the wife instead, and bought the GS out of 6 months shoe and make-up money!!

P No Problem ;)
What do they feed the cows on round there

I have the same problem, I've ordered a GS for Delivery in March and it won't fit down the alley between the houses (I knew this when I bought it). The solution was originally to replace the bars with a set of Renthals but it is a bit more tricky than that. Anyway after a lot of measuring and taking Woolastons demo apart with the help of their part guy (Very helpful), I have decided to fit a set of R1150R bars which reduce the width by approx 3 inches overall. You retain the barend weights and they come with all of the correct holes for heated grips etc... The only downside is that they dont have the crossbrace fitted, but I have a spare one from an old set of Renthals so shall fit that, this will enable the mouning of my GPS.

I hope that this helps and if you are interested I can dig out the exact measurements.

Cheers

On the thorny subject of wives and new toys/kit........mine used to complain bitterly when I aquired extra/new bikes till I pointed out that a lot of chaps I know change their wives with the same regularity that I changed bikes.........it seemed to work.

Cecil the cat

Thanks for reply - this sounds like it might be useful.

I would be grateful for the measurements etc.

Have you tried the GS with the R handlebars ? I mean - actualkly been out and ridden like this ?

Cheers

The option to fit the bars is being done because I either fit them or don't get a GS :(
The R1150R bars reduce the overall width from 35 1/2 inches with Handguards to 32 3/4 inches this retains the orig barend weights, and handguards.
I dont know how it will ride as the bike is being delivered in March but I'm sure it it will be OK and as it will be like this when I get it from New I won't notice the difference.

Does it fit?

Hi,

Any chance of an update?

I'm just about to join the GS fold on an 1100 and really need to get the overall width down to around 825mm.

Is the bike still manageable with narrower bars - I know its only 2 inches a side but its a loss of mechanical advantage.

Like Pint6x - a fine brew btw - once Ive negotiated up a 3'6" passage with gate, I've then got to squeeze it through a std door frame into the 'workshop'.

It might be too late to turn back as I've put a deposit on the bike now. But can I ride home, confidently attack bars with hacksaw and still manage to fit controls, mirrors, heated grips back onto the shorter bars? Or is the 'R' bar swap the best idea.

Thanks in advance.

Mark

Sod all that.....my old f650 would fit through my back gate.......for the GS i've just taken it out and put a second gate in........far easier and you can keep a standard bike......

Gate

Problem is the gate's half way down between two walls 3'6" apart so thats a no go. Thanks anyway.
