Apart from Win98 being a PITA is there any reason why the bloody thing won't connect to the internet via the router?

Basic info:

1. Linksys router connected to ntl cable modem.
2. XP Laptop connected and all security set up using CAT5 cable.
3. XP Laptop then disconnected, wireless Linksys PCMCIA connected, sort the security settings and hey presto we're on the net.
4. Win 98 PC - Install Linksys wireless card software followed by PCI card, reboot, sort the security settings and hey presto... err... WTF? We can talk to the router but we can't go beyond that. The internet doesn't exist?

Does anyone have an idea what basic setting I've missed or should I just get my Dad to upgrade his PC to XP - I have a sneaking suspicion this will solve the problem but I'd rather get round it another way if possible.

TIA

Adam :)

It's not worth it Adam.....

Do a search on 'win98' and 'network' in this section...you'll find many many problems that have been listed.

Basically, Win98 came out before wireless networks were mainstream....it just doesn't support the technology and unless you're an expert who can spend a lot of time tweaking things (it is possible, dependant on hardware and so on) , then carry on tweaking ad infinitum as things go wrong every other week, it just ain't worth the hassle.

XP is actually more user friendly than '98 as well....it's worth the outlay IMHO.

Cheers for the reply Bill, it's just as I thought.

XP it is then - he could do with a fresh install anyway.
