I suffer badly with migraines and as a result am going to reluctantly have to switch back from my S1000XR to the GS (which I've owned before) or to a GSA (which I've never owned). The issue is wind protection as wind blast and noise can trigger a migraine for me. My query is, does the GSA offer significantly better wind protection than the standard GS?

Givi airflow works for me
And i'm a short stop with a peaked helmet

I’d say going from an XR that a GS would be more up your street than a GSA, so I’d recommend getting a GS with a GSA screen. Best of both worlds.
As Nutty says, but have you tried different helmets, you might be surprised, 1 fit does not work for everyone...
I find the GSA noisy, though wind protection is pretty good. I'm still trying to find a screen I'm happy with, will be trying a short screen next.
Buy an RT.
GSA without sat nav preparation ie with the sat nav cradle sitting behind thescreen and causing turbulence of the air flow is a lot quieter and has much less turbulence than one with it fitted

Just loosen the bracket and turn it a few degrees either way, you will be amazed the difference it makes, and sunshade not needed if you turn it more towards you........

Cooky, I have a wanderlust top screen add on thingy, if you want to try it on your bike to see if it helps before going to the trouble of changing, then drop me a pm. You are welcome to borrow it & see if it works.

I believe they should be the same as the screens are interchangeable. I find the MRA Vario screen very good but I'm only 5'8" so may not work for everyone. Puig make a taller version with a spoiler too, it's the spoiler that does most of the work.

Have you tried custom moulded plugs? I found they took a while to get used too, but after in initial familiarisation they've been a revelation.
Mine were from Minerva Hearing (through Specsavers) and cost £125 from memory.

+1 on custome are plugs.
I use the SoundEar from UltimateEar. My ears would ring like tinnitus after riding but I got custom plugs and voila no more ringing and now I can listen to music when riding instead, plugged into my Cardo Q3. Custom ear plugs aren't cheap but a damn site cheaper than a GSA. But if you're really looking to change I say the GSA is ever so slightly better for wind protection, but there aftermarket screens available if you prefer the GS.

But I ride open face and I put on a wunderlich screen extender and it leaves you a lovely windless pocket to sit in ...and keeps most of the rain off.

Thank you all for replying and for the kind offer Cliffbase. I have custom made earplugs from ultimate ear and have tried various helmets from shoei, arai and shuberth. I've spent a fortune on screens and the extenders. I ended up cutting the screen on my XR right down so that it was almost a naked bike and tried an MRA but never really found the right solution. I'm quite small at 5ft 8 so just wondering whether being more enclosed in a big old GSA with a massive screen and bodywork, winglets etc might be the answer. I will of course test ride it's just that sometimes on your test ride day you get calm weather and all seems good and then the real world hits while you live with the bike for years so I was interested in people's thoughts on the comparison.
PS I just can't do an RT. It's nothing personal I could just never bond with an RT. I would be full of self loathing. Every ride.

A lot of screen issues are blamed on the size or the shape. However, one thing to bear in mind, is screen vibration. I find the GSA screen better, but only with screen braces such as Cymarc ones fitted. I also remember the hand guards on my Tiger 1050 causing a fair bit of turbulance, which was transmitted to my helmet.

I’ve fitted a Puig touring screen and Cymarc screen braces to my GS LC and it’s quieter and more protective than the screen on my old RT TC, although the missus says it’s not quite as good for her. I’m also 5’8”. The downside is that it was too protective in the really hot weather last summer.
