wind noise- please help before I go deaf or sell the bike

GSA SCREEN

Fitted gsa screen, no noise but no airflow so now misty helmet (you cant win). ps I have a schuberth concept and filled ear cutouts with soft foam, much better noise reduction.

:thumb2+ I have a C3 with the same screen - no ear plugs with visor in the up position for all speeds. Visor is only now shut in rain. Bloddy marvellous - you also get the benfits of hearing the engine.

Stanley, Get the Givi AF 330 and NN winglets and you will get the job done once and for all! :thumb
It's as good as you'll get on a GS. which obviously isn't the most aero dynamic bike in the world:blast

Don't sell it yet!

I remember the shock of spending £11.000 and not enjoying the bike for the single reason of the wind noise! How do people ride and enjoy these bikes around the world ?
Thanks to this site, i was quickly able to research a fantastic soloution:D
Givi Airflow Screen ONLY,no Winglets, no change of Helmet, low cost soloution. Thanks Guys & Gals for all your efforts posting reports & photos,
7000 miles of enjoyable visor up fun,at any speed and any type of road.

Got a similar problem on my 1100. It seems Givi don't make those screens for my model. Got a TT extender which isn't making much difference. I'll try and move the screen first as it can be adjusted, but as others have suggested it seems to be caused by a 'bubble' of air formed as you move. Earplugs just about keep the noise at bay.

HEADLIGHT PROTECTOR

READ SOMEWHERE THAT THESE CAN DEFLECT WIND ???
IF YOU HAVE ONE YOU MIGHT TRY TAKING IT OFF:flag

Do you use custom made earplugs or plain foam?

My custom made ones are fine and work great, BUT when I am on the bike they resonate so much that I get a headache. I bet this is quite rare and a different set might not resonate...I believe they create a solid path within my canal and they vibrate in such a way that I find unbearable.
However, the foam plugs are excellent.

My 10p worth ...

... is that you need to determine what is causing the noise, then deal with that rather than listening to loads of OTHER peoples solutions.

So, take the screen off completely and ride around for a bit; has the noise gone. If yes, carry on trying screens until you find one that works for you, if no then start looking at your helmet/earplug set-up :rob

As for me, I've done just that. And no, I believe you'll find turbulent flow will still be there. But one cheap experiment to understand this bike's earodynamics a little better :rob.

Standard 1200gs but with adventure screen and winglets.

I ride at all speeds with the visor open only closing it when it rains, the difference in noise levels with the visor closed is incredible.

I do wear glasses which give me some eye protection when the visor is up.

I too was/am very sensitive to wind noise and on the gs it does really spoil some of the fun if it's not controlled. I also found that wind penetrating the bottom of the helmet was one of the bigger causes of the noise so I tried the following:
1 rubber skirt round helmet, this worked really well but was a huge pain to get on so had to be ditched
2 thick woolen neck warmer to partially seal round the base of the helmet
3 and this really is my number 1 tip. Get your foam ear plugs well into your ear. For many years I wasn't shoving mine deep enough and wasnt getting a noise proof fit, or sometimes they would move slightly when putting the helmet on. I now know which plugs work best for my ears (the big orangey pink ones) and I know how deep to push them and still be able to get them out! I use in conjunction with thin balaclava which helps getting helmet on without moving ears too much. I don't get a perfect fit everytime due to rushing and I know before I even set off if the fit isn't right ie can still hear most background noise albeit it's much quieter.

I've got a GSA now and I do find the screen better than standard screen but it's still crap if the earplugs aren't well bedded. So I'd suggest parking spending money on anything until you know you have your favourite earplugs working to the max. Good luck.

GSA screen plus winglets. The ear plugs point is right too. Lick them before inserting and they go in easier and seal better.

Update

Thanks for all of the input and ideas.

I've tried different ear plugs and pushed them so far in that any further would require surgery to get them back out.

I've bought a tankbag to deflect the air flow beneath the helmet. This works a bit, but after less than an hour I'm still getting ringing ears.

I've fannied about with bits of plastic to redirect the air.

My thoughts now are:
I have tinnitus and ear plugs might make that worse- so maybe I need ear plugs that let a bit of noise through?
I tried the bike without earplugs- bloody awful.
Maybe I need a different bike? One that has less wind noise so that I can ride without earplugs? My old S3 was fine without them, but I need comfort, luggtage and pillion carrying capabilities these days.

Trying an RT tomorrow :-)

I'm new to the Forum and have owned a SH 1200GS (dohc), since August. During the past 15 years, riding a Deauville, ST1100 and the past 4 years a 650 Burgman I have never been satisfied with any screen. I have paid a lot of money trying to find a solution to buffeting on all these bikes. My GS came with both the standard and High Adventure screen, neither worked for me. I then tried winglets and Tobinators, slightly better but after an hour riding my head hurts. Reading the Forum recommendations of the Givi Airflow I got one from DK, (top service by the way). For me it's nothing less than miraculous, it's not good, it's perfect, one happy bunny here.

+1 for the Givi Airflow. I often forget to close my visor. And now in freezing weather it keeps the airflow off me so that I am warm enough with just just my RP 2 suit.

I keep saying it Give Airflow + winglets =:bounce1

Does the Givi airflow (Af330??) fit the GSA screen?

I need another 3 inches to get in quiet air. I'm 6'3'' and like to sit very upright.

Thanks.
