I used to suffer from buffeting on mine - until I fitted a taller screen - I'm 6'2" though.

If I recall correctly, I cut 1" off the top then smoothed and polished the edges. I didn't re-fit the black edging strip (too distracting).

I bought the bike in 2004 & sold it to a mate in 2008 (had a K1200GT, Rll50GSA and a R100GS as well by then :D) so my memory may be a bit stale.

The top of the screen should be about level with your nose :thumb

If it were mine the fairing would be on ebay, but then I'm biased.................I HATE fairings! You might as well be on four wheels. Fairings are in the same class as that stupid thing they put behind the back wheels of oilheads................horrible!

But on an RT or GS type with a decent screen you can cover several hundred miles tomorrow and then the same the next day and the next day etc come rain or shine. You can do that on any bike of course but perhaps not at the same speed and you may not make it through the weeks feeling in the same shape...

My tip for screens is remove the black edging and you get the top of the screen/extender so its apporx 1" in the eye line below the horizon as you look forward... Any higher it gets in the way, any lower and it gets noisy.

The screen angle should be swept back if possible but I can't remember the RT being a prob for this. Also you may be sitting back on the seat slightly and very upright and RT's have the weirdest swirl off the fairing that gently pushes you forward on the riders seat so the air is coming in around your back...

Airhead RT and the K100/1100RT/LT fairings are some of the best ever and can get you through virtually any weather at any time of the year with your sanity intact...:D

PS I am 6'6" and always have to modify screens to get any big distance effectiveness...:thumb

Sounds like yer need to cut the top 4 inch off yer head mate :D
Jobs a gudun - sell it me for a greatly reduced price than the steal you got it for :D

Wind noise? Well you are over 50 Jaber :augie

quite right Rob, but dont forget you have got to get tomy age:P

joking apart been discussing my wind problem with Mick, and I have been running with the front air vents closed we have come to the conclusion that there may be slight negative pressure behind the screen, will give it a go in the morning:thumb2

Those stupid things behind oilhead back wheels, are called airheads:hide

And a lot of buffeting is caused by your helmet, try a full face/open face instead if you've got one!

Probably spent more time pissing about with screens than any other part of a bike. Stand up and the Shoei helmet is whisper quiet, back behind the wall of noise and the roar starts again. Wouldn't be without some protection in the cold and wet though but come the warmer months off goes the screen. Life's a compromise :D

Don't recall my R80RT being too bad for a 6 footer.

Back in 2005 I had to go to a family funeral in Somerset, in March - I live near Edinburgh. I decided to take the 80RT instead of the car.

I had a very early start on the Friday, got to my relatives house around 10:00, attended the funeral then had a family evening before heading north at 03:00 hrs. It was freezing with frost everywhere, gales and blizzards on the M5.

I stopped for fuel at Birmingham and had to hug the L/H cylinder to get warm. Then a large coffee sorted me out. It was just starting to get light as I set off again.

I finally got home at 10:45 - in time to get my Land Rover out and launch my neighbour's sailing cruiser - a capstan winch is very useful :D

I wouldn't have wanted to do that trip without that fairing :thumb.

wind

Well opened the front vents, and it was more bearable but didnt go that far or that fast, could do with trying a full face, dont think open face would work because of the blast into the eyes, thanx for all the comments though:thumb
