winglets fracturing 08 Gsa

one of mine has a couple of cracks in it, as my bike is in for a service next week i shall mention it and see what they say about it,

Apparently washers in 08 wingletts were recently changed to a carbon fibre washer. This change I believe is causing the shattering problem, :rob

Can any one else confirm or shine a bit more light on this subject?:type

.

06 1200 GSA, black plastic spacers beneath winglets.

Small radiating cracks.

Belief balloon pricked with pin.

that sounds good,
i told them about my cracked one when i took it in for it's service, when i paid I asked about it and the guy on the service desk said it's probably been done,
went out to get the bike to ride home after they brought it round to the front of the shop and noticed it's not been touched.
lack of communication as usual it seems, will have another word with them when i next go back.

By whom, may we inquire? For those of us that have suffered this fate this information could be useful and save us £30 of replacement parts. Is that from a quotable source, or a nod from a friendly BMUU source?

The long & short of it

Short version.... BMW honoured the warranty

Long verson....

:augie ....Had a surprise call from a nice chap called andy....

He said... "Your replacement wingletts are here ready to fit under warranty , when do you want to come down to have them fitted?"

I said ..."Thank you I appreciate that! I will be down monday"

He said .."We will give your bike a winter check"

I said ..."Thank you I appreciate that!

He Said.. "You might need new tyres look at this theres over 7k on these ones and no thred"

I said ... "Feck your right I never realised"... Gulp!...."How much!"

He Said.. "Two new Battlewings only.. €270 fitted and balanced,& you really need them! "

I said ... because the Warranty was honoured & the tyres and price offered are fair the free coffee was appreciated.. and the service was great I had a great 100km spin getting down here.. .. ok.. lets do business!

You see Win/Win for us both is possible...Thank you JD & BMW!:thumb

I don't have a solution but a probable cause. It could be an inferior grade of acrylic that is used in the manufacturing. I have used and machined many different types and usually a grade with more styrofoam in it seems to radiate cracks more than the grades with less styrofoam because the styrofoam causes it to be more brittle, less styrofoam causes it to be more pliable. I would think that BMW engineers would have looked into the composition of the acrylic as these issues became more prominent. Hope this helps.

Had the right hand one replaced on my 58 plate at 6500 milels now the left one is cracked at 11000 miles. Fuel gauge not working again, trip back to the dealer me thinks!
