Hi folks, is it worth having winglets on a 1200 gs with standard screen?. Im trying to cut down on buffeting and wind noise. Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

I put them on mine after about 3000 miles of using a AF330 screen and the difference is well noteworthy, Which surprised me really !
Installation looks initially tricky but if you follow the instructions on this site you be ok.

YES!! most definitely. made a big difference to me. That with a screen extender on the original screen too. However put on a Givi 330 instead and it gets even better

Yes. Be very careful installing them as the holes have to match up through the frame. Use tape on the outside and drill a pilot hole first to make sure you have lined up.
To answer the question, yes winglets to make an improvement to the standard GS screen. However still got quite a loud wind noise from the top of the helmet but with much reduced buffeting. That said I did upgrade to the Givi 330 and wow....perfect long distance cruiser with no buffeting as all.
Would agree that gettting the holes aligned can be tricky....the frame under the plastic body work is pre drilled to take winglets....get it wrong and makes a bit of a mess. Problem is you can't take it from behind..so to speak. To help me locate the hole I bent over a paper clip to make a rough circle with two end about 4mm apart but aligned..I then located bottom end in the unseen hole and automatically lined up the top. Checked this against the template supplied and went for it with a small drill that I left in the first hole and moved around until it had taken out the plastic using the metal hole to guide the drill bit...worked perfectly.

I would try thr screen without winglets. It is widsr than stock. You may find tyhat the screen is sufficient enough without blowing another £50 on winglets. I did!

Agree if you are going for the screen change to go the route suggested...I did it the wrong way round. However, there is allot of comment from others on this forum who got the Givi then winglets and suggest it improves things still further.

I tried stock screen with winglets and it was better than without wings. Then the af330 with and without wings. Wings went back on and stayed on. It is amazing the difference they make.

So then people, are you all recommending the same AF330 screen?, as i see there are 2 screens made by Givi. The other is the DT330.
DT is similar to a standard screen.
AF (Airflow) is the screen being recommended here.

There is a very long thread on here extolling the virtues of the AF plus wings....seems to work well for quite a few people....me included...just been for a blast 100
no buffeting.
Fitting the wingletts is easy if you use a bradawl from underneath to make a pilot hole so you can then drill down from above

Yes. They are worth it, most obvious in reducing buffeting when carrying a pillion. Bizarrely I'm sure they also influence the air flow over the hand gaurds to keep you hands warmer in winter

OK then, lets take it that its worth having the Givi AF330 screen as well as winglets. Does the 330 mount at the same places as the original screen, and is it a simple job to fit it ?.

Piss easy to fit onto existing fittings
Instructions for screen aren't great but unless your a complete idiot you'll work it out very quickly
OK, AF330 screen purchased locally for a very reasonable £120, fitted today and after a short test it seems a cracking bit of kit. Even in the lowest position there is much less noise and turbulance. RESULTv

Winglets look pis#. Buffet will depend on your own size as much as screening, not to mention speed. A set of ear plugs quietens things down a bit, smoothing out the sound does wonders,,,,,try it and see for yourself.. If you cant handle a bit of wind then stay in your car where everything is safe, warm and comfortable, maybe you could plug in your heated waistcoat should the heated seats not be quite warm enough.......
