I have had a quick search and seen that a couple of people have replaced the cast wheels with wire ones. How easy is this, and where did you get them? (second hand or new)

Will the Sertao wheels fit?

i've looked at this, some one on here has done it, they used a 650 single front wheel and a 800 rear, straight swaps

Post 76 Here explains all :thumb2

Gaining the seratoe spindle, disc, etc part number (against the same for the F650GS) will provide the answer :D

Thanks Dean - some very useful info there but I am totally useless when it comes to working on the bike. It might be beyond my capability to sort this out, but I really would like wire wheels on my 650. Yours looks great!
It looks like the Sertao has a 21" front wheel so that is not an option. I will have to look for an F650 single wheel.

Why not sell the 650 and buy the F800GS? Is it the appearance of the wire wheels or their off road strength that you seek?

I want it partly for appearance and partly for off road strength ( hope to do a tour on not so well tarmacced roads in the next year or so, but nothing too extreme.)
I only bought the 650, new, esrlier this year and I would have loved an 800 but it is much too tall for me ( at 5'4"). I am sure the 650 will do everything I need it to do as it is, but it would possibly be easier with tubes in the tyres in the long run.
I guess I will keep my eyes open for the wheels in case any come up for sale.

Maybe take a look at this video, may change your mind.

Great video! ( was it you?)
You have convinced me that my bike is up to the job - just the sort of riding I would love to be doing.
I guess it would look better with wire wheels but Hey-ho looks aren't everything (Have you seen my husband?) and it might be a bit easier to sort out a puncture on a tubed tyre, but I probably couldn't do that myself anyway.
Perhaps my money would be better spent on some off road training. :thumb

Careful I might just have a word with your other half.:thumb2

well I'm almost totaly useless I sourced the parts (shopping is easy) my bike was older than yours so I took the opertunity to change sprockets, chain and bearings. and luckily I have a good friend who helped me out.

Where there is a wheel theres a way :D

I would say mine was pure cosmetic looks, which is why I had the front rim powder coated to match the rear. But you loose the tubeless the K60 heidenhau Tires on my bike took a while to bed in they are a shock at first rumble rumble 30 ish and below :D had a weave - wobble that appeared at 80 to 85  (now its gone)

Your bike will do all you want it to the alloy wheels are strong on mine with tourance tires which was the best for me and which will be my next tire on the wire wheels. but you can of course fit a more off road biased tire to your alloy's, many do :thumb2

:rob And the F650 compared to the 8 is the better Road bike which is 99% of my riding :beerjug:

Off road training every one who does it gets a lot out of it..... :thumb

DeanI am assuming your bike has ABS. Did you have to source an ABS specific wheel or did your ABS ring fit onto the replacement wheel?

not sure if ABS equipement will fit non ABS wheels or vice versa

I have ABS and to be sure sourced ABS wheels :thumb2 the f800 rear wheel from James sherlock, it came with ABS ring attached, sprocket, bearings and brake disc. (the F650GS single front wheel came with ABS ring attached also from Ebay, but was stripped powder coated by HAGONS.... :D

I'd stick to cast wheels. What a pain spokes are and if they're good enough for the BMW Off Road School they're good enough for anything you're likely to throw at them

Or go for the g650 Sertao.....

Speaking personally I would avoid tubes at any cost. Tubeless are safer and far less prone to punctures - it's why the vast majority of vehicles are fitted with them. If you must have spokes go for a 1200gs with spoked wheels/ tubeless tyres combo. Even my 92 r100r has spokes/tubeless tyres.

I would not own any bike with tubed tyres, that is an absolute no no for me.

My 650 is an ex off road skool bike,so had 6 months of fully off road and there is no damage to the rims, bar the odd mark. But you would get the same on a tubed rim.
So unless your off around the moon [ or got loads of dosh ] the standard Alloys seem to take it.

not much difference between them two bikes not to mention tubed and tubeless :augie :D

But you raise some good points :thumb

So unless your off around the moon :beerjug:

Imagine the space cadet trip report :thumb

Ha! I think he already knows. I didn't marry him for his good looks.
How do you fancy a nice overseas trip on the bikes?

Chris and I have been tossing around a few ideas, but as yet just a little reluctant to commit to too much time away from the little man ( aka Madoc ) until we see how he gets on while we're in Oz. However we still fancy Mugello, perhaps we could put a trip together! BTW MX5 now gone. We're a 2 estate car family. :thumb2

Porsche has gone too, so we are a 2 4x4 family.:thumb
Mugello sounds good. Will be in touch.
