wire wool washer & spacer???

anyone have any ideas what the wire wool washer and spacer are for on the heatshield of the exhaust on a 1200 gs?????, fitted an akra can the weekend, and the standard heatshield fits back on ok, but the enlarger on the side stand foot now sits on the heatshield, but if i remove the spacer and washer from the bottom fixing, everything then clears no problems, so was just wondering what the point of it was, because from what I can see, its pointless

I had the same senario, I think they might be there as an anti vibration pad to stop the shield from cracking but not sure. All I did was bend the shield down at the rear slightly with the palm of my hand ! Its fairly soft so it didn't crease it. Sorted .
