A recently widowed friend of mine decided to go wireless (long story but a good decision in principle given the previous set up) and has acquired a BT HomeHub 2.

Unfortunately her computer had no wireless capability so I’ve taken out an old BT Voyager 1040 card that I had and installed it. The bad news is that the only phone socket is at one end of the house and the computer is at the other and the signal is nowhere near strong enough. I have checked it is working by using a very long telephone cable to get the router near the computer and then all is well.

The computer is low down and close to a radiator but moving it around has had little success. I have changed the channel with some small gain but nowhere near enough (anyway the house is isolated and is unlikely to have any significant interference).

What would you advise to get an acceptable signal? Moving the computer to another room is not an option.

I thought the possibilities would be:

a) Get an external wireless antenna
b) Get a wireless repeater
c) Change the wireless card to a more modern one which might have better reception capabilities
d) Get a properly fitted telephone extension to a point near the computer

Cost is an issue.

Any ideas/recommendations from the assembled wisdom out there?

@Schtum: Thanks. I feel a Blue Peter moment coming on. :) Sorry about the HTML - you were quick off the mark; I got rid of it pretty fast. I normally just type in comments but this time I drafted it in Word and copy and pasted - got a bit carried away.

@Dickieboy: USB dongle is a good idea - hadn't thought of that. Distance is probably about 10m - 12m with 4 walls in the way.

As no wireless capability is available.. have you thought of using powerline ethernet adapters? They turn your ring main wiring into a network cable.

I've used them to good effect in the office, where the distance to router was too great.

There's loads on fleabay or BTvision give them away for free with their package.

Oh a good one and, being as fickle as a very fickle thing, my current preferred solution. I'll let you know how it pans out.

Thanks all.

+1 :thumb2 for the powerline ethernet adapters. Could not get BBC IPlayer to work on the PS3 and Call of Duty was slow, jerky and had serious lag until I fitted one (thanks to all who chipped in with the idea). Only problem is COD is now mega fast and I get fragged more frequently :D

An update...

Went down the Powerline ethernet route. Worked a treat. :thumb2 Thanks all for the help.
