Anyone any idea why even with a LAN cable connected, both this PC and my laptop tell me that it isn't connected? Both the icon on the task bar and in my network places show the red cross!

I've spent the past few hours trying to set up a wirless network.

I have a D-Link Wireless ADSL router DSL-G604T

I have followed the instructions.

1 connected power.

2 plugged in telephone cable.

3 plugged in ethernet cable.

Gone to Network connections, selected LAN, properties, internet protocol TCP/IP, properties, selected Obtain IP address automatically then OK.

All this does is take me back to the LAN connection that says my LAN cable is unplugged!

I tried doing the same process on the laptop. Same result.

Is there some way that both of my LAN connections are buggered???

After buying the wrong bit of kit last time, I thought it would be plug and play this time :spitfire

Sorry Mike, but the D-Link router is crap. I have one and it is v.unreliable. It constantly fails to provide an IP address to the connected PC resulting in no network connection being set up.

Suggest you return it and get a decent one (Belkin for example).

Andy

Mike - I have exactly the same D-Link router bought about 3 weeks ago, together with the dongle, from PC World and also experienced issues. In the end I phoned the support desk and they were really helpful - went through everything step by step and got it all sorted in about 25 minutes. The guy really was good - very knowledgeable - he wasn't just reading from a script like some support desks.

I very nearly returned it and bought the Belkin but since the tech support sorted it, I haven't had an issue since and now have a desktop and laptop all connected and working well. They are also on a local call tarriff, not one of these 50p a minute rip-off lines.

Andy,

Thanks for that.

When I saw the name I remembered something but couldn't remember whether it was good or bad!

Ho hum!

I still have a problem with both computers LAN connection.

Oh sod it. I don't really need a wireless connection anyway (I only fancied having the laptop on-line in the garage and maybe surfing on-line from other rooms when the notion strikes). I don't seem destined to get it right.

I've been trying the support desk all afternoon, on hold.

After your experience, I'll give them another try.

this is the router I have and found it easy to set up with no problems

try these

the router has a hardware reset button on the back of the unit press this and wait for it to reboot.

once this happens try accessing the routers setup page using internet explorer the page address is 192.168.1.1

once in go to the "set up page" and "DHCP option" and ensure the "server is on".

then go to the "tools page" and select "system commands" the select "save all"

try this see how you get on with it.

cheers

Sorry Mike, but the D-Link router is crap

I'll second that crap crap crap :spitfire
Did everything that others report on Google- i.e. locks up after s few web pages requiring frequent re sets

Now have a Kcorp KLG 575 as recommended in the PC Pro A list and I must say that it has not locked up even once ! Handles 3 PC's together with wireless printing to HPpsc 2510

If still under warranty- take it back and say it is faulty- because it was faulty as soon as it was made IMHO :D

The problem will be one of 2 things, try the hard reset option (pull out the power) Also if you are connecting to the router with a cable directly you need to use a cross over able this has 2 wire inside the cable connected to a different pin on the plug.

This will give you a not connected message and it cannot see the other end.

The other thing that may be wrong is that you have to go into the router and configure the settings for your broadband provider so that the wireless router can log onto the provider.

Can you get to 192.168.1.1 this is the default page for the router, the username and password are both admin.

If you cannot get to that page then there is a fault with your modem or the wireless card in your machine is not configured correctly.

I will also second the support desk at dlink, if you can get though they are very good but i also have to say that the router is a bit crap......

Crash

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

Took the router back yesterday.

I have now decided that Wireless is one step too far for me.

It's not as simple as my poor little needs it to be!

Thanks for your patience :thumb
