Both of those devices are wireless routers. This bit enables you to connect several machines to the same internet connection either with wires to the ethernet ports or via wireless.

The difference is the way the device connects to the internet.

The "modem router" connects to a standard telephone line using an ADSL connection. This device handles all communication between your network and your ISP.

The "wireless router" connects to another device via the WAN port. Usually this is a cable modem supplied by Virginmedia but it could be a separate ADSL modem or another router. The other device talks to the internet.
