Wiring a Zumo 550 to an '04 R1150GSA

Done some searching but can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

Got a Zumo 550. Comes with a lead that has 2 wires (red & blue) with a fuse installed near the bike connection end. Where should these ends be wired into ? I presume not the battery but something connected to when the bike is turned on ? (See how little I know ! )

There is a cigarette lighter type socket on the front plastic (but smaller) but i suspect I might want that for the intercom system i plan to install (if I don't electrocute meeself doing this!).

Any help gratefully received !

I went direct to the battery, well actually I took my feed of the starter (but it is the same thing and I did not have to faf with the tank). Some folks find a switched live and use that.
The choice is yours.

Hi Bury_Dave.. fook ya chucking money at it already aren't you !

Just fitted my 550 too...wired direct to the battery, I just lifted the tank high enough at the back so I could thread the Zumo power cable through the visible gap on the RHS. Used a stiff wire with the cable attached. The Zumo can then charge itself even with the ignition off...

Yep, I know but at least it's a useful thing rather than pure bling. It's useable in the car too. I swore I'd never get a SatNav but whilst in-car map navigation is easy enough, navigating on a bike whilst looking for petrol or accommodation or the right turn for the next pass abroad is another matter entirely.

Thanks for the advice. That's EXACTLY what i was looking for.

I've actually removed stuff so far: the panniers and rack are off and I've just kept the top box on to keep the missus in place when I accelerate.(I'll keep them though for touring so no need for anyone to ask if they're for sale). I'm also taking off the Remus Evolution Titanium and Ti 'Y' piece and they will go on Ebay as soon as the stock cat' and can arrive in the mail from a used parts dealer.

Might get standard GS front and rear shock and centre stand too to lower the thing a tad ........... nope, you're right, it has started already !! LOL

Some problems ...

... with the Zumo have been attributed to wiring it straight to the battery; apparently the constantly powered pins make the connectors corrode more quickly, best advice is to use a switched live

good advice mr 'lertone'!

at my fishial place of work im fitting these things on a reglier basis.

i tend to use a 4 pin relay or an item that can be brought from our shop..
the four pin relay is simple and does not need a degree in rocket science.

firstly all the pins are numbered
pin 30 will be connected to the pos terminal of the battery via a fused link keep the fuse as close to the battery as poss .
pin 87 is connected to the zumo red lead with its own fuse link.
pin 84 goes to earth along with the black lead from the zumo cable.
and finally the tricky bit.
the last pin -pin 85 is connected to a switched live. i tend to take that from the diagnostic plug under the seat.
and voilà! your zumo cradle will switch on with the ignition..
