Anyone have any tips?

I have a 2003 R1150GS which I brought over from Dubai - where heated grips are not required... it didn't come standard with heated grips there. Since living in the UK I purchased the right hand switch gear with the heated grip control (as the wires for the right indicator had also become frayed due to a kink in the wire at the zip tie), and also some Heat Demon heating elements. I would like to connect this to the switch for the OEM heated grips.

I know which wires coming from the switch are the correct ones, but when it goes into the control centre I don't know how to go from there... and the wiring diagrams I have found so far are not very helpful. Basically I would like to know which wires, coming out of the control centre, are for the heated grips... a picture, or a marked up wiring diagram would help!

All constructive suggestions welcome... :help and beer too... :beerjug:

I seem to remember that when I bought mine (2001) that the bikes with heated grips had an alternator with greater output to cope with the load:confused:, might be worth checking, I'm sure someone with far far greater knowledge of theses things will come along and advise. Cheers:beer jug:John B

Correct - you got the higher output alternator if your 1150 was specced with either ABS or grips

well, i've got ABS, so presumably also the higher output alternator... doesn't really get me much further with regards to the wiring issue with the non-OEM heated grips which weren't standard on mine...?

Ok, from memory you're looking for a couple of two-way connectors above the engine under the tank, or at least that's where the stock wiring from my OEM grips ran back into the main loom. No recollection of colours, sorry. And it's a bit of a mess-around to pull the tank off just to take a look, what with needing the bike running to get to work in the morning.

But if you can find some likely-looking unused connedtors up around the main spine under there it shouldn't take too much checking with a multimeter while playing with the switch?

Good luck!

don't know it this helps wiring diagram from R100GS airhead to oxford heated grips

bmw grips have 1 element the heat setting are done by switching in a dropper resistor to change the temp

I think the wiring on the 2003 1150GS is a bit different from the R100GS as far as I can tell from wiring diagrams I have seen... Haven't had a chance to pull the tank off to get a pic of what's available down there... but there are a few 'unused' connectors. Question then is of course - if the bike didn't come with heated grips, will the right fuse/relay be present for the control? Presumably the central control/brain is the same, and only the switch and elements/wires were omitted... but who knows!

I'll see if I can find a wiring diagram on the 1150 workshop manual later this evening.
