Wiring Help Please - Garmin

HELP!!

Right I know absolutely nothing about bike electrics. I want to wire my garmin v directly to the battery. So I've bought the right cable with the garmin connector on one end and nothing on the other end. I've also bought a 1 amp in line fuse. I've got to get myself some terminal connectors but not sure what size.

So could someone give me some pointers as to how to connect up whole lot. I can figure some of it but would rather ask and do it right first time. I'm fine with two internal wires but when it comes to four I'm done!

Which GPS are you looking to connect ? My GPS V only takes a 0.5amp fuse . Also I seem to remember only 2 wires not 4....although the plug into the back of the unit has 4 holes that connect to the 4 pins , 2 are power and 2 are for data transfer I suspect. I took a feed from the accesory socket and wired in the fuse then ran it up to a small audio socket which I put in the dash.

My experience with Garmin cables for various handheld GPSR's is that Red is positive DC, and Black is Negative DC (ground).

Your mileage may vary...

You could try what I did (also an electronics novice..).

1.Left side of the bike - Take off the panel which holds the auxiliary power socket. Need to remove one screw.
2. Disconnect the plastic push-in fitting which connects the power wires going into the back of the power socket.
3. Jam the bare wires from your GPS power lead into the crimped metal bits holding the end of the bikes power wires, the ones you've just disconnected. You now have the GPS power wires piggybacking off the wires coming from the bike's battery. Stick it all tight with duct tape, and reconnect the plastic bits, and put it all back together.
It's a bit fiddly, but doesn't require any equipment or knowledge, and is a LOT easier than removing the tank to get at the battery.
Red on the GPS wire goes with the red+white bike wire.

Seems to work fine for me.
