I've got '99 1150GS which came without heated grips. I managed to buy some grips which I've fitted but finding a 2nd-hand heated grip switchgear is like finding the Holy Grail (a new one is about £180...ouch). The ever-friendly guy at Motorworks said that it is possible to wire up the grips without the standard switchgear setup.

Does anyone know how to actually do this?
Has anyone ever done this?

I don't want to go through another winter of hugging my engine at every set of lights to stop my fingers freezing.

Thanks

Dunk I'm interested as well...are the grips original bmw? how much?
BTW apparently your fingers will b cold anyway...

I can't help you with the wiring query, but I can tell you that Oxford products do a wrap-around h-grip system for about £50 new. Not as tidy as the BMW units, but if all else fails, it could be a back-up plan before winter sets in.

Maybe

Get the ADV fog light switch panel (bolts on to handlebar clamps for about £8 if I remember) and use the 1100 switch in it Part number 71607669881. Worth a go.

The switch only acts to put the grips into either series (half heat) or parallel (full heat) in the circuit, so you need a DPDT switch to do this. Just spotted the post above; that sounds like a better idea. I'll get me coat.

Carbold: I got the grips (genuine BMW) from Sherlocks last year for about £50.

Londog: cheers for that mate, I think I was a day late as I mailed them before posting here.

Swesty and littleredrooster: cheers guys, I'll get on it with Motorworks and see if I can get it done.
