Wiring loom overheating

Hi All

Just getting prepared, fore armed ect, as bike has been recovered to dealer. Under warantee. I hope.

Smell of electrical burning, outer black insulation has melted/burnt in several places along its length.
The wire comes out of, what looks like, the esa unit on the front suspension.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or got any ideas please?

I also hope this is under warranty as it sounds expensive.

It sounds like something has chafed the wire to the frame. Lets hope its not cooked anything sensitive. The loom alongside battery is common for chafed wires.

Well, just got a call from BMW tek.

He suggested mice...................................

Had to explain I was an electronics engineer and that was not mice. A mouse that selectively chewed a single wire all around the loom.
Not full of hope at present.

All electronics and electrical control systems are run by smoke. How do we know? When the smoke escapes the thing stops working.

Hi Rick, I was thinking about this (I was with him when he needed to be recovered). The insulation looked rotted rather than burnt which may suggest either long term low heat rather than a sudden burst of high heat - so high resistance in something or other drawing higher than normal current, or attack from another source (brake fluid given where the rot was?) or something else spilled on it but that may also be corroding elsewhere and giving the burning smell when electricity is passing through it and getting hot.

I hope its nothing serious though. And don't give up with the bike they are great really.

The worst case would be the wiring loom has to be replaced. Not so bad - whole loom (used) is only about £150 on eBay. You could DIY fit just work from one end and one by one, unplugging the old and plugging in the new. No need for special skills just great attention to detail.
