Wiring Spotlights on R1150GS

I am taking the GS over the Pyrenees again at the end of March, after a fantastic trip at this time last year. The roads are clear although there may be as much as 8ft snow piled at the side, and there is very little traffic. Also with the snow on the mountains it can be quite breathtaking (or that could be the cold)

The trouble with this time of year is that it can get very dark in the mountains so I have opted for a set of PIAA 510 spotlights to assist complete with lighting bar/bracket. I have also purchased an auto switch as this appeared to be the done thing!

My question, now that I have thought about it is:-

To wire the spots I can't see the practicality of installing the auto switch. Since I just want the lights to come on with high beam then I assume I can wire the lights to a relay, with a feed to the battery, and this will be triggered by a tap on the high beam circuit. If I also install a switch mid-span on the trigger wire I can then choose whether or not I want the spots to come on or not.

By doing this the spots will come on and off with the high/low beam switch, which I think will be quick to activate, rather than come round a corner with oncoming traffic and have to switch to low beam and cancel the auto switch in a rush at the same time.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Except for the extra switch mid-span as you put it, that was exactly the way I was going to wire my driving lights at first.

I didn't want to have some out-of-place looking switch somewhere on the handlebars, so I was going to use the high beam to activate my driving light relay.

I ended up going with the AutoSwitch because I wanted full control of my driving lights. No regrets.

As for fumbling to turn everything off in a split second for on-coming traffic, you can always see their headlights well in advance to do so.

Here is my R1150 GS Driving Light Relay & AutoSwitch Install, and if you plan to add more electrical accessories, there is my R1150 GS Blue Sea Systems 5025 Fuse Block Install.

Maybe not the route you plan to take, but they may provide some ideas.
