The centre electrode should be positive, the side one earth.

They're labelled, on the bottom of the socket!
(mine are at least! Mike's right though, centre is positive)
If you're still unsure, wobble the two connectors at the bottom while looking down the hole
you will see the centre connector move when you're wobbling the pin thats connected to it.. there's normaly a + by the side of it also.

Yes, Mouse and Paul, you are right, the terminals are labelled at the bottom. Obviously I need new glasses!
