The pivot above the left cylinder was full of water and the large Allen head fixing inside was cracked. Attempts to undo it resulted in complete failure of the raised hex part. I am ready to get brutal with a chisel and club hammer but before I do is it a standard thread and is there a better way than the hammer and chisel?

It's an alloy cover and is fairly brittle. Break it up with an old punch or similar.

I know it's too late now but when you get around to reassembly, fix the plastic cover in place with some silicon sealant to prevent a repeat.

Thanks Mike.

It was either the original installation at manufacture or the dealer when they fitted a new bottom fork brace, they left the alloy cap cracked:mad: and hid it with the cover. I've never had he cover off in 78K miles
