My 800 has developed this wobble through the steering in the last month and especially these last few weeks. Don’t think it’s balancing as the weights and still on & in place + I do not feel any vibrations outside this band of speed, even on the motorway. When I mention wobble, it like the bars are turning left, right, left, right in quick successions but ever so slightly.....strange.

Anyone have a theory?

Me Too, but I have just swopped tyres to TKC's from the original "ditchfinders"

I seem to get a very slight tank slap or wobble that certainly wasnt there before.

Change of road surface can start it off, but so slight i'm not too concerned.

A very nicely timed thread.

On the way back from HUTM, i was playing with relaxing on the A-roads and loosened my grip, so that my thumb and forefinger created a loop the handlebars. I was quite surprised to see a small oscillation which would get more pronounced if allowed. I assumed it was a 'resonance' kind of thing, and with my additional weight added to the bars, could not be felt as the resonating frequency would change, though i wondered if it was a wheel balancing issue...

I hadn't noticed it before, but also hadn't tried this, so not sure if it's new or was always there.

This was on tarmac and have Anakee on the front and Anakee 2 on the back.

Any ideas of the cause?

Could be head bearings too tight, or a squared off rear tyre.

I was always told that a problem at the front of the bike is usually fixed at the back! So on that basis, check the rear tyre and swing arm plus rear wheel bearings.

I also have Anakee on the front and Anakee 2 on the rear. Tyre is not squared off so may be bearings. It is booked in for its chain recall in three weeks time so I will get them to check it out. Thanks for the input. I do welcome more theories though. Thanks

wait until you load up a bit, ive had this proble for the last 12000 miles
you learn to live with it.
as i said, it gets a lot worse when you load the back up a bit

Rick,

That oscillation is a very common thing on many bikes... I've had quite a few bikes and a few of them have had this anomaly, although mine have always been most noticeable while slowing down and between 40-30mph with no hands on the bars... yeah, we've all done it haven't we!

Generally you'll not notice it as the grip you have on the bars acts as a damper, and the oscillations really aren't strong enough to be noticed unless there's no controlling force i.e. you!

I think most of the time it's caused by tyres and profiles, and occasionally you'll find a bike that's rock solid on Dunlops might develop this little wobble with Bridgstones - I certainly had that with my Pan European.

I'd start to worry if the oscillations become so severe that you can feel them through the bars, or if they happen at higher road speeds - this is definitely a sign that there's something wrong.

If this is the case then I'd start with looking at the front wheel bearings and the headstock bearings - ask Paddy how his felt with the failed headstock bearings...

AFAIK - if you have a problem with your rear bearings then the bike will feel kind of 'smeary' in a turn, almost like a drift of the rear when you're cornering. If a front bearing fails, then it allows the wheel to wobble a fair bit which will give exactly the kind of problem you've described, but it probably won't be speed dependant.

You can check the front easily but will need to prop the bike up on the bash plate to keep the front wheel off the ground. Let me know if you need a 'how to' ... lolz - you were paying attention at the maintenance weekend weren't you ?? :toungincheek

Check the angle of the handguards. If they are not aligned then you can get a wobble at high speeds. Let go of one bar and the wobble will stop. I've had this problem a few times now.

Chain recall?

Sorry for hijacking the thread but I'm curious - what year / month is your bike and did BMW contact you about the chain or did this come up during a service or did you contact them proactively?

Cheers for the info chaps...I will pop the front wheel up later today and investigate the situation then report back.

March 2009...I called South London BMW, now Vines and checked with them. Subsequently received a letter in the post from Cannon BMW a week later (which was about two weeks ago). Hope this helps. :thumb2

Flapping leather jacket was my cause, bit obvious really but had me thinking for a while... Is it a wobble (front end) or a weave (the whole bike in oscillation) ?
