1150GS ~ started her fine earlier to move her. Went to restart her shortly after and I didn't quite catch her on the throttle and she stalled......

Trying to re-start her and all I get is a very loud, fast, click click click click click.

The battery seems good, put her on an Optimate and half an hour later not taking any more charge, all green lights. Terminals read at 13.2V.

I've tried rocking her backward and forward in gear to no avail.

Any ideas, I'm supposed to be doing the DGR on here tomorrow

Loose connection on battery terminal or starter.
Weak battery in which case new battery.

As explained in another thread.

Volt (V), the potential difference describes the ability for electrons to flow.
Ampere (A), current describes the ability to do work.
Power which is calculated VxA.

To turn a motor you need a strong current flow, like water turning a waterwheel. A weak stream will turn it just so so, but in a flood it will spin much faster as more water flows past.

It is exactly the same concept with a battery. It can have a potential difference between positive (+) and negative (-) of 12V but if the current that it will transmit is low it won't turn the starter. These 2 are also related to each other in the inverse ie the higher the voltage the lower the current will be. Remember the calculation for Power, VxA? To produce the same power if the current drops low the voltage has to increase and vice versa.

You can measure volt all day long but it will give you no idea of the state of the battery.
The reason for a poor flow of electrons can be;

low current ie spent battery.
poor connections ie high resistance.

In days of old I’d have said the Bendix is stuck on your starter motor, probably stuck on the starter ring

The quick fix is to twat the cast bit at the front of the starter motor (gently) with a hammer or spanner whilst rocking it back and forth in gear

Don’t know if it’s accessible on the GS? This was a car mechanic technique

Check your connections! 1stly

Voltage is not an indication of amps available ! :rob

If you have a car nearby? Stick a pair of jump leads onto the car battery with the engine not running and if it spins over fine

The bike battery is foocked

Yeah, had to do that to an old Guzzi once......anyway, yes I've tried that, all to no avail ta.

I had a similar thing on mine many years ago it was a small metal cover plate inside the starter that had come loose and jammed it.I removed it and it has been fine ever since.

Reckon it's the battery but ta :)

Dr, I managed to link together two (shitty) jumpstart leads as that's as close as I could get to the car......no more clicking, just struggling to turn over (voltage loss over the bodged together leads?). No jump leads and back to the clicking.

New battery it is then, what a bummer though, my daughter and her dog were gonna ride in the sidecar with me for the DGR, best give her a call......

Thanks all and have a good Saturday night :beerjug:

Whip the one out of the KTM ;)

Or a feck off 12V car battery in the sidecar foottwell

jump start when you need to go :)

Ive started the GS a few times that way

Ha! It's tempting, an old outfit of mine had the battery in the chair :D TBH this was never meant to be, there have been so many logistical things to sort that have been a right hassle and now this.......I'm gonna open a bottle of Rioja, cheers :)

Hmmm Maybe I will

Rioja? Wimps! Pints of whisky and coke.

Cheap cooking whisky and diet coke... :). Love it. :)

No no... No... It's wonderful stuff and just like STP, it lubricates parts that more expensive lubricants don't reach. Hahaha.

I thought he meant the other Scottish whiskey n coke...🙄

Asda special...... 24 quid for 1.5L + £7 for a slab of diet coke... Makes for a great Saturday night :)
